Weird cytopathology report

My current status: I had three biopsies last week, and have an appointment with a surgeon a week from Monday. One of the biopsies showed a definite malignancy, and was the basis for my getting an appointment to see a surgeon.

But one of the other biopsy reports came through today. Specifically, it is a cytopathology report from a fine needle aspiration of "2N12 cystic w/ bloody fluid," which I think refers to something cystic (a lymph node, maybe?) located 2:00 axis, 12 cm from nipple.

This cytopathology report is . . . weird. The diagnosis, in its entirety, reads: "Very rare atypical cells of unknown significance in cyst contents." The recommendation: "clinical and radiographic correlations."

My reaction: WTF?? I have messaged my primary care doctor asking about this, but while I am waiting to hear back, have any of you had a report like this, or have any idea what it might mean?

Any insight will be very welcome.

This sounds like a path report from a cyst, likely rather than a lymph node. Sounds like there is some debris and/or cells that are atypical, but the “very rare" reference refers to the number of cells in the sample and it means there were very few of them. It is not a characterization of the type of cells, as in a rare type. I have had this type of report before as well

    Thank you! That is reassuring.
