Last month I had excisional biopsy, after which the specimen was sent to the lab and I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma grade 1

Please is there a way to verify the result?

Is there a way to have a retest?(in the absence of any other lump).

I have undergone other blood tests, xrays and scans, and the results came out good. (confirming that the supposed cancer cells has not spread to any other part of my body)

A mastectomy has been recommended by the doctor, but I need to verify the diagnosis before making such a decision.

I am 26yrs

Sharon you should be able to request that your slides be sent to another facility to evaluate. Please discuss with your doctor getting a second read on the pathology by a different lab and discuss where best to send the sample to. Sorry you are having to deal with this at your age. You don't mention the size of the mass or your receptor status (ER/PR/HER2) but the grade sure is some good news. I wish you all the best. Please keep us updated on how you are doing.

When I changed my MO and went to a different hospital she had my frozen specimen retested. I didn't know this was being done until I received the results. I thought I was PR+ and it was confirmed I was PR-. IDC was never in question. Why do you feel your diagnosis is incorrect?

As others have said, you should have no problem getting a second opinion because your tissue samples can be used. Getting second opinions is very common and both your facility and the receiving facility should be very familiar with how to proceed. Take care.

Sharon, I am so sorry you are facing breast cancer at such a young age.

Breast cancer often does not form as a lump. So the absence of a lump does not put into question a breast cancer diagnosis. Similarly, it is very normal to be diagnosed with breast cancer and have blood tests, xrays and scans come back clear.

That said, if you have any uncertainty about your diagnosis, it's an good idea to have the biopsy pathology slides reread by a different pathologist. My situation was similar to flashlight's - when I changed surgeons and went to a different hospital, they automatically requested the biopsy sample from my original facility and retested it. In my case, all the results were the same. As others have said, you should put this request to your doctor.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply, I didn't know the specimen would still be available after 1 month.
I appreciate the insights and suggestions, would request for the specimen as soon as possible.

Btw,the diagnosis only read "invasive ductal carcinoma;NOS;SBR grade1, Score 5/9".

Hormone receptor and HER2 status wasn't provided.
Mass size wasn't also mentioned in the biopsy result, but the ultrasound I had earlier showed 1.73*1.25cm.

The diagnosis may not be wrong, guess I just want it to be, for one reason;there is no known case of cancer in my both parents family, for another I fear losing a part of my body and chemotherapy.
The report alone multiplied my age, affected my sleep, daily activities and mental wellbeing.

The majority of breast cancers don't have a genetic or family history connection. And the mass size comes from imaging and final pathology, not from the biopsy. But you should have more information from the biopsy, such as the hormone receptor status. Don't get ahead of yourself, though; you may not need chemo, although it's more likely if you're younger. But a lot of women do just fine with it and continue working and doing other normal activities, including sports.

Sharon, There are threads here with young women in their 20s that maybe the mods can direct you to. It may be helpful. You are so young and I know it is overwhelming. Could you have a lumpectomy and then decide on a mastectomy? Can you go for a 2nd opinion?
