Liver ultrasound delayed

Options

I am super annoyed. I’ve been worried about some symptoms and blood work for weeks now and finally got a liver ultrasound scheduled. My MO has been awesome and sent in the order while reassuring me it was a precaution to make me feel better. Yesterday I checked my orders to make sure I didn’t have to do anything special for the test — kidney, pelvic, abdominal were all covered, but nothing about liver. Good to go. Of course for those who have had one already — nope — as I found out this afternoon a liver ultrasound is an abdominal ultrasound. So they couldn’t do it. The soonest they could get me back in is next Thursday.

another week of trying to distract myself and reminding myself that it’s probably nothing and keeping my sh*t together.

I don't understand why they couldn't do it since it said abdominal. I went in before BC because of upper right sided pain. They did an ultrasound to check my gallbladder, and liver. Turns out I had a fatty liver. Recently I went on a low carb diet and lost 15Lbs. My liver function labs finally came back normal. Good luck to you.

I'm with flashlight in wondering why they just couldn't proceed.... might depend on how the order was written... couldn't proceed if something there needed changed?? Regardless I hear you frustration, exasperation and worry, esp. with another week of waiting.... Update us on how things go and certainly when you hear back on results....

they could have done the scan, but because I had eaten lunch about an hour before the scan my gallbladder was actively working to digest my lunch, which was blocking a lot of the imaging.

I’m more accepting of the wait, but I was pretty upset yesterday

got the ultrasound today and it looks like fatty liver. I’m relieved it’s not mets. I’m waiting to hear from my oncologist to see if there will be further testing or consultations. I’m hoping it was caused by the chemo, since that seems really likely (one study I saw showed something like 50% of women treated with chemo develop fatty liver). I’m also hoping it might reverse itself if I watch my diet and exercise and have no more chemo.

Even if it doesn’t reverse itself though — it seems like something I can live with, although I will miss beer

Great news, aside from the potential loss of beer drinking, I imagine you could have one a week if it is something you really enjoy!

searching out new craft breweries and hanging out at bars to chat with people has always been a huge part of our social life. Plus my husband just got into learning how to make seriously good cocktails. Not drinking will be an adjustment, but I think the occasional drink will be okay and I can always have lemonade or tea and my husband will have a DD.

Also, at this point when I have had booze over the last month or so it has made me feel so miserable that it hasn’t been worth it at all. So I don’t think the adjustment will actually be that hard.

Better news than mets though you'll likely have some interventions to work on.... Changes to your social life will be a loss of sorts though still much better than mets.... Happy for you!

    Hi,

Did you figure anything out with the fatty liver? My ALT and AST have spiked on CMF chemo after 12 infusions (weekly) and I had an ultrasound today that shows fatty liver. I don't drink and my liver numbers were normal before. Do they pause chemo for this?

I still haven’t talked to my doctor about it, although I have a message in with him. I am well past chemo so I’m not sure if they pause or not. It might depend on if there is damage or not. Sorry I couldn’t be more help!
