Postpone biopsy for 6 month need advice please
Hi ,
I just had mammogram and they called me for second mammogram. They wanted to check again my left breast.
The report is showing
BIRADS CATEGORY 04-SUSPICIOUS FINDING- Biopsy Should Be Considered
I just want to do biopsy after 6 month.
I recently had very bad accident and have fractures in my transverse processes L2 L3 and l4 and also in my spine.
Also I am very scared of biopsy and cancer.
My mom had cancer and I was with my mom during her cancer treatment.
I had to see therapist to have normal life ( I had fear that her cancer could come back )
I would be appreciate if you could guide me.
Is that okay to postpone the biopsy for six month ?
Any one who were in similar situation?
Thanks in advance

Hi—I’m sorry for all your circumstances. I don’t think it would be wise to wait six months. I think you’d be able to move on if you got a benign result...and if it goes the other way you want to find it as early as possible. Isn’t that why we get our mammograms?
I don’t see a good reason to wait. I’m sorry about your accident....but I think you need to try to do this. I don’t know if you’ve ever gotten a breast biopsy. I’ve had 2 and I didn’t find them to be all that bad. Really.

Hi Janet,
You sound scared and I don't blame you. It sounds like you have been through a lot and may already be in a fair amount of pain. I'm not a doctor or medical professional, so I can not weigh in on your decision medically. All I can say is this:
I hear you. My mom had cancer, too. She was diagnosed at age 57. And I was with her through the worst of it, and she died of it.
I am much younger than she was when she was diagnosed, so when my doctor told me after four years of clear mammograms that they wanted me to start having scans every six months, I was not sure it was necessary. I pushed back a little, but my doctor encouraged me to get the 6 month scan. I did, and they found two lumps on the MRI and ABUS that they couldn't see with the mammogram. I am so glad I listened to her, and I'm glad I got the scans when I did instead of waiting.
Some cancers grow slowly and some grow quickly, so six months for one person's cancer is different from six months for another person's cancer.
If I were in your shoes I would definitely get the biopsy as soon as possible. If it's not cancer, you can relax! And if it is, you can figure out the best treatment plan/timing options for yourself based on your other injuries and what grade of cancer it is.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best!

Thank you so much for your advice.
My aunt die because of cancer and my mom had long long painful treatment. It was stage 3B.
Yes I think you are right I have to do biopsy.
If you don’t mind why you had MRI?
Is there difference between biopsy and MRI?
Sorry if it’s dump question.
MRI is easier but hard to afford it.

I really appreciate your concern. I agree with you don’t make sense to wait for 6 month.
I am just making excuses since had bad experience with cancer with my mom.
I am agree for doing my biopsy ASAP.

Hi--Going back to your question about MRI vs. biopsy. An MRI is another screening tool, like an ultrasound or a mammogram, to find anything that looks suspicious.
MRIs tend to have a higher resolution, so they often pick up more in women with dense breasts. All of these tests use different technologies so one might pick up a finding, while another won't.
An MRI does not replace a biopsy. Unfortunately, the only way to absolutely diagnose cancer is with a biopsy. You can be suspicious of a finding, but a biopsy is usually needed.
Women at high risk for breast cancer or recurrence will sometimes have MRIs in their screening plan. My breast surgeon is rotating mammograms and MRIs every six months for a while after my diagnosis to keep a close eye on things. Again, an MRI does not replace a biopsy. Hope that helps.

Hi Janet, I'm sorry you have to go through this. My mom also had cancer and passed away from it 2 years ago so I've been terrified as well. I went for my first screening mammogram and sadly they found cancer. I got my biopsy a week later to confirm. I'm much younger than my mom was, I was 37 at diagnosis, a few months ago. It has all been terrifying and I'm usually the type to want to procrastinate and wait and not deal with things but I am so, so glad that everything got taken care of super quickly and my treatment started a month later. I got a prescription for Ativan for anxiety and you only take it once in a while if needed, not every day. It has helped so much for these scary appointments. Also the biopsy wasn't bad at all, I didn't feel a thing.

Janet, I understand your feelings. My mother died of breast cancer when she was 56 and she had all the treatments. So I was terrified about having cancer and I was diagnosed coming up on 12 years ago. But back to the biopsy--I wouldn't put it off for 6 months. My biopsy wasn't bad at all and everyone was so nice. We are all here for you and if you need to check in every day or several times a day, we will help you walk through this. Prayers and hugs.

Dear Kathabus ,
Thank you so much for explaining to me.

Dear Cowgirl13,
Thanks for kind words. Yes I went through a lot with my mom. My mom oncologist told me if you don’t want to have cancer avoid sugar and fat. I never wanted to go through what my mom went through. I lost more then 50 lb. I always eat healthy and exercise.
I am still not believing I am going for biopsy. But , I don’t have any choice . I saw many folks who ignored and went through a lot. My mom cancer was not bad but she didn’t wanted to do mammogram. My aunt die because of cancer. Finally she had not choice and started to have pain in her breast. We found out when it was stage 3B.
It’s miracle she is a live . But she went through a LOT.
During her cancer treatment. I appreciate your kind words and I will update you .

Dear Livinlife,
Thanks for your encouraging words. I didn’t know I could request them if I feel uncomfortable. Sure, I will let them know if I feel uncomfortable.
I remember my mom biopsy. It was different then Stereotactic biopsy. She was comfortable during biopsy but had bad fever at night.
I will update you . Thanks again

Dear ShyViolet,
It’s very sad when I find most of people who had similar situation like me. My posts wrote me about their moms.
It’s painful that our mom went through that bad experience and now we are in similar situation.
I am glad that you start treatment and it’s working for you. I am glad you had good experience with your biopsy. I find some posts where some fold really had bad experience. I thought it’s better not to read those .Also , waiting period for results is more worse then biopsy.
Thanks again encouraging me.
