Just Diagnosed with multiple metastases

Hello,

I was just diagnosed with multiple metastases to my liver after 4 years of being in remission. My oncologist ordered ultrasound biopsy and it's scheduled on 5/19. Could someone please let me know if you have been through the same situation and what treatment plan did you get? I was initially diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in 2017 and had surgeries and chemo. Thank you and take care

Hi EymiG, I'm sorry you find yourself here with this diagnosis. That really sucks. I too was originally Stage 1. I recurred with mets to lung & liver 26 months after original diagnosis.

Your treatment will depend largely on your hormone markers (which might be changed from your original breast cancer - so it's good you're getting a biopsy), as well as how extensive the liver mets and your overall liver function (as shown on blood tests).

We have an active liver mets thread https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/8/topics/...

as well as thread on local treatments for liver mets which depending on the size/number of your mets may be an option you could explore https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/8/topics/...

I'm triple negative and went straight to chemo & immunotherapy & have been on that for 13 months now.

If you read through the threads I linked you'll see some other treatment plans which might prepare you for what your oncologist recommends.

Hi, EymiG. I echo what moth says: Your treatment plan will depend on the characteristics of the cancer and your current physical condition. Also what chemo you did four years ago. And your goals and preferences should be part of the discussion. I was diagnosed stage i initially, then stage iv three years later. Since the liver mets were extensive, diffuse, and large, my first treatment was Taxol chemo for five months, followed by hormonal and targeted therapy since it was ER+PR+Her2-. But since you mention that you had chemo and do not mention hormonal therapy or herceptin, I'm guessing it was triple negative? If you can fill out the diagnosis and treatment fields, we will be better able to comment here and also direct you to other appropriate threads. Sorry you need to be here, but welcome.

Thank you for your reply. That was very helpful for me. I have been taking Anastrozole which is a hormone blocker since 2017 but did not have herceptin since it was stage 1A the first time I was diagnosed in 2/2017.

Oh, ok. So it was ER+. The biopsy will check to see if it still is. Many women who have a recurrence on an aromatase inhibitor (anastrazole is one) and who have bc that is still ER+ are given Faslodex, which is also an anti-estrogen but works in a different way. It is monthly injections, which is not so great, but for most it has fewer side effects, which is nice. I have no joint pain and stiffness on it.

    How are you feeling?

just FYI, herceptin isn't given based on stage but based on being HER2+. Sounds like you were ER+/PR+ and HER2- first time around?
