Question About Gift for Oncologist

My oncologist of 10 years, and her nurse, will both retire this year. I plan to get each one a small personalized gift. While I’ve always called the nurse by her first name, I’ve only ever called my onc “Dr. Jones.” Should I personalize her gift, a small keepsake she could put on a shelf or desk, “Dr. Mary Jones”? Or should it just be “Mary Jones”? I’m sort of leaning towards Dr. Mary Jones.

I get a bit emotional thinking of how they’ve really been there for me the past 10 years. In many ways, I’ve been spoiled, altho I know they do for their other patients what they do for me, so it’s not that I got special treatment. They’re just such a good team, like a well oiled machine, and I’ve been able to count on them since the beginning. It’s hard to put into words.

Divine, I also like Dr. Mary Jones and can understand completely why you would want to do this. It’s a funny thing, the relationship between your oncology team and oneself. I often think about gifts but have held back for the typical occasions but this one is pretty significant. I think it’s lovely and will be much appreciated.

Mrs M, I am also in favor of Dr. Mary Jones. I am so sorry you are losing your beloved mo to retirement. I truly love my mo, she has been so good to me and I can't imagine not having her as my partner as we go through the "journey" of living with mbc. I got a little choked up just reading your post. Congrats to your mo on her retirement, and hope your new doc will treat you just as well for another 10 years.

I agree with adding the Dr. My oncologist had a baby a couple of years ago. I got her a baby gift, and I addressed the card to Dr. I haven't called her by her first name ever.

Sounds like a unanimous vote to use her title of Dr. for the personalization! Thanks for your opinions. I have been reflecting on this doctor-patient relationship I’ve had (nurse, too). They’re retiring at the end of summer, so I will only have one more appointment with them.
