    I have not stayed overnight for any of my surgeries (in Alberta, Canada).

    The first surgery (mastectomies, with immediate reconstruction to implants) they stuck me in a nice semi-private room on day surgery unit (room at end of unit with glass sliding doors) once I was out of surgery/recovery by late morning - it was my first time with GA and I had a rough time coming out of it - but I was still discharged by early evening. I was obviously sore but I was able to walk, take myself to washroom, etc. Once we got the post-operative nausea under control I was able to focus on doing what I needed to do to get home.

    Other times (implant swaps, fat grafting) I have left within 2-4 hours after coming out of recovery except this last time was about 6 hours as one of my incisions started to bleed a lot every time I did a lap around unit.

    I live 2 1/2 hours away from hospital but have always been eager to return back home! I suppose if you have the option to stay it’s better to have it, but I find hospitals are not the ideal places to actually relax and sleep!

    My surgery was yesterday morning and I just got home. I’m really glad I stayed overnight because I was pretty woozy. I’m still sore today but it’s nothing I can’t handle. My first follow up appointment is scheduled for the 8th.

    Sorry I haven’t been active here much but it’s great to see you ladies are going well!

    My mom is just a little over 4 weeks post op and doing good. They had her go home the night of the surgery, she couldn’t stay even for the night due to covid. Lucky the hospital is like a 10 minute ride from home.

    Hello all,

    I have my right mastectomy on April 12. Wondering how long the drains stay in? Surgeon thought one week for one drain, couldn't say how long for the second drain. Any tips for those early days post op? I've had 3 c-sections, so surgery is not new, but not sure how much I will be able to use my right arm? Thank you!     Hey Julie,

    I cannot speak to anyone else’s experience and I know every body is different but for my mother they only stayed in for a little over a week. She had surgery on 3/1 and by 3/9 the plastic surgeon took out her single drain. She had a single mastectomy and got 9 nodes taken out. There was never excessive draining and by the time our appointment rolled around the fluid was minimal so it made sense they had it taken out. That being said, I’ve also read about ladies who have had them for longer and I’m not sure what that depends on so you might want to ask. Either way I’m wishing you the best of luck (:

    Hi Juju-Mar

    I just had a right mastectomy on Monday. On Wednesday i felt swollen and retaining fluids. Turns out that is the body's way of protecting injury. Doctor said it was normal. The fluid in the drains are redder at first then gradually lighten to pink, yellowish. Each day it is a little less in the drains. I am day 6 and still have the drains. I have an apt in a week so they will be there atleast until then even if there is no drainage. So expect a week or 2 based on when your follow up appointment will be.

    Also have little to no pain. Some discomfort but no pain. Was really surprised.

    Saw BC surgeon yesterday, I'm still filling w/ fluid 50cc today so she's been draining it. Have to be super un-active this week. I saw my MO today and my onotype DX score came back super low..yay NO Chemo, but will be on the pill Arimidex. Will be seeing radiologist next week and PT today.
