edited March 2021 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

Hi everyone, sorry so long, I’m really trying not to panic!

A couple years ago I began to notice lumps on my ribs and swelling in my legs, stomach, all over it seemed. I saw a doctor who said some people are just lumpy, and another who looked perplexed, and another who made me feel crazy. After going to urgent care for bad pain in my side the doctor said I had calcifications on my ribs. I went to my family doc who said he didn't see any report of that and didn't feel them in the exam, and told me I was imagining it. I switched doctors.

Last summer my left breast started to kind of burn, and I noticed a lump just above my breast, a smaller lump on the other just above also. I went to the women’s health and the doc said she didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary, but if I wanted to be reassured she could order an ultrasound. With COVID all over the place I decided I’d better not risk it with my low immune system and didn’t make an appointment for it. The Last few months I noticed increased swelling on my ribs and above my right collarbone (and below it). I went to urgent care for digestive issues and the X-ray showed a “structure” between lowest rib and kidney -possible calcification.

Followed up with My PCP and she said the lumps on my ribs might be arthritis (I’ve been told I could have a connective tissue disease like RA, which my mom has). A week ago I felt very weak skiing and noticed more lumps, seemed like on my ribs mostly, but also above and under my breasts. I Went in for a regular mammogram because I knew it was time, and thought it would catch any possible problems related to the breasts. While filling out the paperwork I explained the lumps and then the nurse asked me about it, looking very concerned and I pointed to where I know the lumps were, just above my breast, she was really concerned. She asked how big, Luke an acorn size, and I answered yes. She said she needs to schedule me instead for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound for when the doctor is there, which is a week from today.

Now last night I noticed while sitting on my couch, my ribs really hurt. Today after exercise of course I was exhausted, but now I’m noticing that pain coming back and burning in my left breast, around to my back and down to the bottom of my rib. A Couple days ago I noticed it felt like bb’s in my breast (though it’s felt like that over most of my body). My dog is acting really strange and just wants to cuddle me all the time and lick me intensely. He freaks out when I leave, sits outside the bathroom door, he won’t let me out of his sight. While lovely to have such a caring friend, I’ve gotten pretty scared. I’ve got a young adult child with autism another with emotional issues, I have to be strong. And something else to mention is my father had on hand anti-cancer, and my mother has lung cancer (chemo has so far taken care of it), and my aunt had breast cancer when she was probably in her 60s. I feel like if this were cancer, then it would probably be more of a systemic type like lymphoma that’s affecting the breast, just because it’s seemed to be so non-specific up until recently.

Thank you for listening. I’m not really asking for advice specifically, as I will be at the diagnostic imaging next week, but anyone who has dealt with similar I’m interested in hearing about.

Sounds like you have a lot going on and waiting is increasing your anxiety. Has your PCP ordered any labs? My daughter has RA and there are labs that helps rule this out with the help of xrays. Don't be afraid of getting testing done because of Covid. Once you have your mammogram and ultrasound you will know what is going on. Your dog might be feeling your anxiety. Take a breath.

Dear ThaiBoxGirl21, welcome to Breastcancer.org. We are sorry to hear what you are going through. This must be an uncertain and anxious time for you for sure, but we just wanted to give you some hope, as the vast majority of breast lumps turn out to be benign. Good luck at your mammo and ultrasound next week, please keep us posted on how it goes. Remember, the BCO community is here to support you.

    Sending good vibes your way!

Welcome ThaiBoxGirl! I'm glad you finally got to imaging and the nurse was so proactive! You have the additional wait though should also hear from the doc after the diagnostic so saves waiting then.... I agree with flashlight the dog may be feeling your anxiety.... I also agree on blood work. If you're suspecting RA or something else on the autoimmune spectrum ask your doc if they are willing to run an ANA blood test. If that comes back positive they will look for specific antibodies... the lab typically does that automatically.... Please let us know how things go with your diagnostic mammogram.. You'll likely be posting in between as well...

hi everyone, I realized I had a typo, I was meaning it to say my dad had Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and died from bladder cancer, so as you could imagine I’m a little sensitive about cancer risk. LivinLife had mentioned the tests for RA, and ANA testing. It’s very odd because I’ve actually been feeling ill for three years and seeing a Rheumatologist for the same time. My ANA results have gone from negative to positive to negative over three years, which I know is strange. When positive and the doc ran additional panel it did show the pattern could possibly be Lupus, but it was not certain, so that’s when coming back fit testing the ANA showed negative. The RF was not showing anything detectable enough to diagnose me with RA. It feels like something has been “brewing” for so long. I’m a medical mystery I feel. I had an appendix rupture years ago and didn’t even have a fever until it ruptured. Probably another reason fir confusion and anxiety around symptoms. I’ll keep you all posted.
