Can a mammogram "smush" a lump? And other qs

41 years old. Scanty periods now for a year or so. Just had a mammogram and worried sick about the results (symptoms - firm lump with ridges on lower outer quadrant of breast detected 4 days ago, nipple discharge for a while, absolutely no family history, no other conditions).

Here are a couple of things I am going nuts thinking about:

- What do you all think is the possible diagnosis? (Clear to brown nipple discharge for a few months >>> Medium hard lump found around the nipple, now looks like two lumps, right now only clear discharge)

- I noticed a new lump right below my areola a couple of hours after the mammogram. What can that be??? Can a lump shift because of a mammogram? How can a new lump form in such a short period of time?

- Although I should ideally have gone to a doctor, I decided to get a screening mammogram first. Was that a good idea? Should I schedule a doc appointment as I wait for the mammogram results? (The results for a screening mammogram can take a week or so, right?)

Thanks in advance!! Please help me if you have any opinion at all. I am very upset and worried.

    I am sorry you had to worry sick about this. I haven’t heard, read that lump shift because of a mammogram, or appears in such a short period of time.

    If you have not already scheduled appointment with your doctor, please do. He or she likely order diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound to take a closer look at your lump, and also exam your lump.

    Please also know that, whatever appears on mammogram can very much just fibroadenoma. Hope you will have good result.

    Thanks so much!! In you all's experience, is it better to see an obgyn for a breast lump with nipple discharge? Would they be more knowledeable than a family physician? I don't really have a good family physician.

    Anyone have any gut reactions about my two signs - lump + clear discharge?

    Yes, please find an ob/gyn. You do need to find out why you’re having these issues. That being said, none of us are doctors and I personally don’t like to speculate about what I don’t know. Take care

    sadwife, do try to see an ob/gyn doctor, and as I'm sure others will say, "STAY AWAY FROM DR. GOOGLE!" He's not a real doctor and he'll put all kinds of bad ideas into your head.

    I don't have any other thoughts on your questions, although I'm sure I'd be wondering the same things as you are.

    Hi, Who ordered the mammogram? That doctor will be receiving the report. Usually if a problem is seen you will receive a call within a couple of days. I would call your Gyn and schedule an appointment to go over your mammogram results and let them know about the nipple discharge. Do you have fibrocystic breast?

    No idea if I have fibrocystic breast but there is only one lump. Btw, the second one probably was a result of tissue shifting slightly because of the mammogram and not an actual lump. I just went in for a screening mammogram. Haven't seen any doc yet. Thanks again for your responses!

    Would love to hear from anyone who has had a combination of a single lump along with clear or yellowish nipple discharge. The combination seems scary!

    I haven't experienced what you're going through sadwife.... I want to welcome you! I'm glad you went for a screening mammogram and agree with the others about scheduling with your OBGYN. Hopefully you hear soon on the mammogram results so you can see what is recommended from here. Maybe mention to GYN scheduler to put a note into the doc you are having an issue and had a recent screening mammogram for that. Please keep us posted on any new developments.....

    OK so the screening mammogram report came back. I got a call back to schedule a diagnostic mammogram. Apparently, there were two separate lumps. Before the mammogram, I could only feel one, but now I can feel two distinct ones.

    One of them is near the nipple area and the other slightly left of that (central left).

    I have a diagnostic mammogram scheduled next week.

    Does anyone have any thoughts on when there are two lumps vs. one? Is that a good sign or a bad sign?

    Since none of us have seen your mammos and since most of us do not have medical training, it would irresponsible to venture a guess on good vs bad. Others can tell you of their experiences but that may or may not have any bearing on your situation. I know you want answers but getting ahead of what is known or relying on us to be armchair medical professionals is not a good idea. Please wait until you have the full picture of your situation before you begin the “what if’s”. I think speculation without complete info or trying to guess how things might go for you based on how they went for others is really stressful. Please deal with what you know and when you know more than you can plan the next steps.take care
