Follow-up/Monitoring Procedures

My wife had a lumpectomy. She is now in the midst of an aromatase therapy. Her doctor feels there is no need for any scans (PET, CT, MRI, or other) over the first five years of therapy. Is that inconsistent with anyone else's course of treatment and monitoring? (My neighbor had same type of tumor, and then had her first scan at just about 5 years after removal. The scan revealed a 2" tumor [same tumor] in her lungs.) It seems to me that with regular scanning the tumor would have been realized much sooner and they would have been treating a 2cm tumor instead of 2" tumor.

If your wife was diagnosed with just LCIS (which is not cancer), and taking hormonal therapy, the yes, the Dr. is correct. She should be getting at least annual visits and mammography. Only if something were to come up would further testing be ordered. Hope that helps.

Hi CancerCurious, and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're sorry to hear of your wife's diagnosis, but we're glad you've found us. As you can already see, our Community is an amazing source of advice, information, and support -- we're all here for you both!

As ctmbsikia points out, your wife should at least be receiving her normal screening mammograms and checkups. For more information, check out the main Breastcancer.org site's page on Mammograms After Different Types of Surgery, under Mammograms After Lumpectomy.

We hope this helps. Please let us know how else we can assist you. We look forward to seeing you around the Community!
