    Good Morning Ladies,

Today I can finally get going...I got a new antibiotic yesterday which is finally working and I'm beginning to feel well enough to diet and exercise, and I have a new incentive.

I met a wonderfully lady at church on Sunday, who came up, smiled, patted me on the back, and told me she had breast cancer 15 years ago, 13 infected lymph nodes, was treated and has not had a sign of recurrence!!! She is wirey thin. I've read that thin women have a higher survival rate, because they produce less estrogen. So I'm going to aim for 117...or at least 120.

Forgot to weigh this morning before tea, but I think I'm probably in the 131-132 range. Being sick the past few weeks has been so depressing, I've just felt myself getting more and more tired, and less fit, and now all I want to do is get those muscles pumping and feel some fresh air in my lungs. I have approximately 6-7 weeks before I start on hormone therapy and I'd like to make as much progress as possible before then.

I believe the chart is up-to-date with everything you gals have sent me...except Carol. I didn't get your photo!! I sent you a PM with two email addresses to try again, did you get it?

It's getting a little lonely here...hope to see you all back soon. Do you think a weekly sign-in would be a good idea?

Hello! Well, in spite of my residual head cold I started my exercise regimen yesterday. I did weight training on lower body and a mile on the treadmill. Today I will do upper body weight training and a mile. I am really, really watching what I eat.

At least it's a step in the right direction!

    Forward on, girls!

    Hello ladies,

Just wanted to post a breakfast suggestion.

Kashi makes all these high fiber, good tasting cereals. They actually have one that gives you 45% of your daily fiber requirement in one serving. I had it today and it kept me mostly full until lunch time. Usually when I eat cereal I am hungry an hour later.

I was reading somewhere on another thread about weight gain and tamoxifen; started to get all paranoid although I seem to be holding my own.

The last two days I have had to use my trainer as work got in the way of running. I now have a bunch of running workouts courtesy of one of the trainers at the gym. I am anxious to try them and hopefully will get in a workout before work tomorrow.

I hope that everyone's workout are going well. I got my inspiration today from watching Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale. He is hot, hot, hot!!!! He definitely distracted me ( or maybe added to) from my rapidly beating heart.

    Have a good night.

Nice to hear from you folks. I had a setback yesterday...urinary infection is back. I was feeling so good in the morning and thinking about actually going for a run, but then it hit. I'm on antibiotic Round #11 and I am wondering if we need a new tactic, like IV antibiotics my MD suggested a few weeks ago. Also, I had a temporary crown on a tooth that fell off, and it was too painful to drink much water for about 2 days, so maybe that was the problem. Well, I got the permanent crown on yesterday and I've been drinking LOTS of water...and I do feel better.

My official POST-PARTY weight is 132.5....not too bad. And I'm keeping a food diary starting yesterday. Today I'll go for a long, fast walk. That's about all I'm up too. Maybe tomorrow I can run. This is depressing because I was able to exercise, run, and do strength training all through chemo until the last round on March 5.

Acqw...I started eating oatmeal for breakfast for the first time in my life a few months ago, and it really helps make the pounds come off. It sticks with you and is also good for cholesterol.

Mizsissy: Hope you're feeling better. That's a lot going on at one time.

I'm back to my healthy eating routine today (and exercising). Ever since my stepdad's diagnosis, I've been eating out of control. Surprisingly, when I was at the onc's on Monday they weighed me, I've actually lost a total of 22 pounds from my high point. so that 20 needs to be changed to 22.

Well, I took a brisk walk today and actually enjoyed it, but I have to admit it got brisker and brisker the closer I got the bathroom!!!!

Congratulations on those 2 extra pounds. So much for those caramels...where did you get them?!!!

    Miz Sissy,
Thank you for starting this thread. Am new to it and want to get back in shape as well. Used to run 4.7 miles several times per week before chemo and haven't done much since that. Did run 1/2 mile and walked 1/2 mile last week - it felt wonderful. Now I just need to get back into a routine!

Keep up the good work ladies.

    Raye99 & Mizsissy,

Thank you so very much! I certainly do not feel beautiful at all! I am ready to grow some hair and I so have some peach fuzz coming in but it has only been 2 weeks since my last Taxol. Summers in Texas are hot and so is my wig!

I'm sore today from the startup of my exercise program. I'm going strong though!

    Hugs girls!

    MizSissy,

Thanks for pointing that out about my PM selecton. I had the wrong box checked! I wondered why I wasn't getting any PMs lately. It is been fixed so I can now receive them.

I am a little nervous about being on the chart! ha. Sounds crazy...I really just need to firm up. I am happy with my weight, just need to get rid of some flab. I joined Jenny Craig two months before I was diagnosed and lost 20lbs. When the onc said I could gain weight during chemo I was extra careful not to overeat! Easier said than done, let me tell ya! 120lbs currently, 5'6". Happy with that.

Jo, and yes you are simply gorgeous! I am 3 months post last Taxol and am not wearing wigs any longer. I actually got a compliment last night on my "hair cut" heh. So hang in there - in a couple months you can take that hot wig off (if you want to, of course). Some ladies feel comfortable wearing it longer, but with that pretty face, you will look stunning with the short short hair!

    xoxo

Just got back from my first run after chemo!!! It felt wonderful, especially to be outside for the first time after winter. It was sunny and warm; I couldn't go as far but it felt great to get my blood circulating and fresh air into my lungs.

A BC friend of mine has recommended a number of remedies that involve cranberry sugars and powders, as well as yogurt cultures. I've been drinking copius quantities of water and am feeling better...what on earth did people do before antibiotics?

Raye, you certainly are a good weight; you don't need to lose. Maybe you could send a photo and also mention what kinds of activities you plan to do to firm up. Also, when did you finish chemo?

I expect more friends from my January Chemo starter group to join us as they finish chemo; I was the first one to graduate, but others are beginning to finish up this month.

    Hi MizSissy,

Great job on the run! It does feel wonderful to get outside again!!

I finished chemo on 12/29. I plan on running every night after work on the trail or at the gym (I need to rejoin, I am on a medical leave of absence), doing pilates and some weight training, since I am now menopausal from the chemo!

I cannot get a photo to paste. Just imagine a brunette with very very short hair .

    Congrats on your run Mizsissy!

Beach plans got cancelled; one of my employees has jury duty and has to appear for selection tomorrow.

Happily the judge is a member of my gym so when I asked him about me getting a day at the beach he said he would keep my employee off the list for next Friday so I will get my bike rides in then (assuming it doesn't rain).

Tomorrow I will do the Kamoor steps after work. That is a steep trail that leads to 800+ steps to the bottom of the New River Gorge, then back up again. My record is 32 minutes, last time I did it it took 41; definitely have a ways to go.

I don't know about all of you but I am enjoying exercise in a way I haven't in years. I think it changes when you can no longer take good health for granted.

Acqw, I know what you mean about enjoying exercise. It felt to great to be out today; tomorrow I'm going to do strength training. When you can feel your body moving and blood pumping it's like a new affirmation of being alive...almost of privilege you took for granted before. I think I'm going to enjoy exercise more than ever!!!

Ran again today, this time with DH to keep me company; did some living room strength training yesterday...geez it feels good to be outside. The only challenge is to get a run into between trips to the you-know-where. I have an appointment on Monday with a new doctor; I really hope she can help.

Gained a couple pounds...I just didn't want to worry about weight while getting my fitness back, but I'm ready to lose again.

How is everyone else doing in their program? Tightening up? Firming up? Feeling better?

    Not a pretty sight.

I have a slight head cold so I am using that as my excuse.

    How is everyone else doing?

I have a question about Arimidex. You mentioned you lost half your hair again on Arimidex but that it is growing and thickening up again. Are you still taking Arimidex or any AI? I ask because I am taking Arimidex, for the last month or so, and my hair is patchy looking. Also am losing weight too. Just wondering what to expect. The only hair I have is post chemo and it is only 1/2 inch long. Is this going to go due to Arimidex?

So glad you are doing well!

Hi, yes, it is the Arimidex. If you go to Breast Camcer Organization's website, you can see their report on the side effects of AIs, hair loss being among them. Many women lose their eyelashes several times on the AIs as well.

Because I'd just had a mastectomy and was going thru rads, my oncologist let me stop taking Arimidex. I will be restarting shortly and my oncologist is hoping I will not lose my hair again. She thought that perhaps starting Arimidex one week after dose dense chemo ended was too soon to let those damaged follicles recover.

I have been using two great products by Jan Marini, one for eyelashes, and one for hair growth. My hair is super fine but I just had a haircut yesterday - I have about 2 inches, and it is very thick, although like baby hair. I swear it is the Jan Marini product. I intend to keep using it when I resume the Arimidex, and hope this will make a difference.

Since I was diagnosed as stage 3, grade 3, 7 cc, I don't dare not take it. I'm also not going to color my hair again until I see if it starts to thin again.

I don't know if Arimidex affects hair growth, all I know is it can cause hair loss and hair thining. I think hair growth can be very stunted following chemo in many woman, and that it can take months before it really starts growing again.

I'm not looking forward to the other side effects, such as neuropathy and joint pain, but at least there are supplements that I can take for that.

You might want to give than Jan Marini product a try. Also, some women swear by Biotin for thinning hair, as well as Nioxin shampoo. I may start that Biotin, a supplement, as well when I resume Arimidex, just as insurance!

Take care and good luck. It seems so unfair that we have to go through hell during treatment, and then have so many problems with these medications to prevent recurrence. I wonder if I will ever feel the same sometimes, but it beats having BC again.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, I CONFESS!

After a lifetime of healthy eating, I have been eating a lot of junk the past week. I have been feeling really terrible and my doctor had tests run on MOnday. When I kept calling for the results this week, which were in Tuesday evening, and they didn't call back, and I heard about Elizabeth Edwards, I really 'freaked out'. I thought the news must be terrible and then I started eating chocolate and microwave popcorn, a winning combination, in addition to my regular 4 small meals a day, plus lots of peanut butter. I exercise every day but still, this is ridiculous.

I recently had a mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction and I am worried that if I do not stop, I gonna have rolls of fat hanging over my flat stomach.

I'm guessing that I'm not the only woman here who had a reaction to the news about Elizabeth Edwards - I found it terrifying. Still, eating is not the answer so I'm going to get some fish and greens for dinner tonight. I should probably give the popcorn and chocolate to my very thin neighbor who eats and eats and never gains a pound.

    Thanks for listening,

I have been trying to exercise for 3 hours per week (based on all of the studies). I have been doing pretty good but have not lost any weight yet. I think I am firming up because I hadn't done anything for a while after the bi-lateral. I am very hungry all of a sudden. Don't know if it's the Tamoxifen kicking in (I've been on it for 3 months) or if it's my body healing? Maybe it's all the exercise and I am boosting my metabolism (I can hope!).

I too was upset to hear about Elizabeth Edwards, but it just made me more determined to do everything within my power to help myself, which includes exercising a minimum of 3 hours per week.

    Hi Carol,

BTW, I never got the picture you sent. Can you resend it?

Are you exercising 3x per week, or just a total of 3 hours? What I do is alternate aerobics with strength training. I go for a 30-60 minutes run-walk or bike ride every other day, with strength training on the intervening days. Also, keep track of calorie count. Try to stay under 1200, and write everything down for a few days and keep daily totals just so you get an idea of what a 1200 calorie intake is like.

To keep your appetite down, stay away from carbs (except oatmeal), and fill up on celery, carrots, etc. in between meals. Foods that are hard to chew are supposed to help raise your blood sugar...

    Good luck!!!

    Hi MizSissy,

I went for a run (well a walk/run on Monday) - 3 miles, but I was only able to run about 1 mile. It's so hard now.

I agree with the calories. I try and stay between 1200-1500 to maintain weight, 1200 or less to lose. It works for me, even with no exercise. But sometimes I get very hungry.

Hunger...it's a natural body urge and it's hard not to give into it but it CAN be controlled. It usually takes a day or two. Here's a model day for hunger control:

Breakfast: 2/3's cup cooked oatmeal with Olivio and Splenda--delicious (250 cals). Olivio is based on olive oil, is GOOD fat, and satisfies your appetite longer.

Mid-Morning Snack: Several long stalks of celery, nice cold and crisp, with salt (25 cals)

Lunch: Salad, or stirfry consisting of fresh vegetables (all you want), 4 ounces cooked lean meat or fish (ground turkey, beef, pork, fish, etc.) and 1/2 cup cooked whole grain rice, cooked in vegetable oil, or dressed with a vegetable oil dressing. The more roughage the better (lettuce, broccoli, etc. (260 cals)

Early afternoon snack: 2 squares Lindt 85% cocoa chocolate (110 cals). Again, some fat is good.

Late afternoon snack: 10 snack carrots or an apple (80 cals)

Dinner: Same as lunch, except slight larger portions (300 cals).

Evening: One cup plan low fat or regular yogurt (has lots of tryptophan to help you sleep). Unsweetened with real sugar or splenda...the taste of sweet can make you hungry later in the day (100-120 cals). Some fat is good, it will keep you from getting hungry.

Still hungry? More celery and carrots.

Do this for a few days and you'll lose your hunger. Don't forget to exercise & stay busy...

BTW, I have a wonderful cookbook that helps me died, called SLIM WOK COOKERY by Ciel Dyer. It is full of delicious stirfries beautifully seasoned from cuisines all around the world. Each serving lists calories (180-350). It's been out of print for years but you can usually can one really cheap at www.bookfinder.com

    Mizsissy,
Now that my boys (11 and 8) are into baseball season, I work out whenever I can. Sometimes it's 2 or 3 nights in a row for 30 - 45 minutes, other times it's an hour 3 times per week. I just try to squeeze it in whenever I can. I am mixing up walking on the treadmill with strength training 2X per week. Last night I got home from baseball practice at 8:00 and did 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes of weights.

I agree with you about the alcohol Mizsissy!

I think I drank a bottle of wine when I went to the local pizza place with a girlfriend on Friday. (To our credit we did have the spinach salad and flatbread with goat cheese)

I went for a run on Friday; the weather was beautiful. Unfortunately the hills were tortuous and they seem to have irritated my right knee patellofemoral tracking problems. You'd think that as a PT I would be able to avoid injury. If the way the injury occured weren't so absolutely glorious then I think it would depress me. So I am stuck walking until I can get the thing quieted down again.

How is everyone else doing with theire weight and fitnes goals?

Yah, we need to get people to check in with their weights. I didn't do well my week after chemo because I was drinking lots of organic cranberry juice and yogurt to combat the infections and antibiotic effects.

I'm over that now. DH & I had gotten into a nightly drinking thing and we've both decided it's time for change. We had dinner earlier than normal (cutting out the usual social hour) and now we're going for a run. I'll see if it makes a difference tomorrow when I weigh in!!!

BTW, I took my own advice tried the Hunger Reduction diet I listed for you guys above, and I found it works...I buy really nice middle eastern style yogurt at an Arab grocery and it's a wonderful sleep inducer (lots of tryptophan).
