hi everyone! Hoping for some insight. I have a long history of fibroadenomas. A few months ago found a new lump in right breast. Had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound yesterday. Radiologist said given my prior history this will prob have the same findings. Recommended either watch it with ultrasound every 6 months for 2 years or biopsy and be done with it. I chose biopsy which I have tomorrow morning. His report said this. The first and last part are is from midwife and my obgyn office.

----Yvonne, I do not actually look at the pictures myself, just the report. This is what the report states:

New right breast mass, 10:30 position, 6 cm from nipple, correlating with

  • patient's palpable lump. This probably represents a new fibroadenoma.

Other findings are felt stable and benign.

FOLLOW-UP: Given interval change, follow-up ultrasound-guided right breast
vacuum biopsy of the mass labeled 10:30, 6 cm from the nipple is advised.BI-RADS ASSESSMENT CATEGORY: (4) Suspicious
ASSESSMENT SUBCATEGORY: (4A) Low suspicion for malignancy

  • So it sounds like the radiologist suspects a new fibroadenoma and is recommending a biopsy just to be certain. The lump is graded "suspicious," but with low suspicion for malignancy. Therefore, I wouldn't be too concerned at this time -----

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

In your other post you said he gave you the option of doing six month follow up, or he would biopsy if you wanted. At this point it sounds like to me he really isn’t thinking it is cancer. Sounds like the only reason he gave a 4a instead of a 3 was to justify the biopsy, likely for insurance purposes

Yes after my tests yesterday he came and talked to me and said I could do ultrasound followups or biopsy and be done with it. I know logically it is probably all fine but my anxiety like to tell me lies. Lol

What Melissa wrote. That was exactly my thought too.

BI-RADS3 means an assessment of 2% or less risk of cancer and a recommendation of short-term follow-up screening. BI-RADS4a means an assessment of >2% - 10% risk of cancer and a recommendation for a biopsy.

Short term screening would not be offered up for a BI-RADS3. So since it was, it sounds to me as though the radiologist put in the BI-RADS number after you said you would be doing the biopsy.

I've had too many biopsies so any time I've had a BI-RADS3, I've been glad to avoid the biopsy. But it's important that you do what makes you comfortable. So hopefully your decision to have the biopsy isn't making you more nervous.
