GYN ordered mammogram/ultrasound/possible MRI

Hi all,

Saw my GYN today for a checkup and told her that I do breast exams every so often and I have been able to express blood in one area of the nipple and greenish/yellowish fluid out of other areas (one side only). She was concerned about the bloody discharge and gave me a script for a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound. She said she may want an MRI but we would take it a step at a time. I feel a small lump in the breast as well.

Can intermittent nipple discharge that is bloody be a big concern? I had made a note this time last year that I had bloody nipple discharge (March 2020).

My GYN was able to schedule the mammogram for next week which is really nice (meaning I don’t have to wait weeks).

    A mamo (if you can get 3D it is good if you can and can help see better I think). Depending on where you go for yours the results might be sent to your doctor but where I am it is breast cancer and they actually do read them while you are there. Then if they need more scans done they can get them done while you are there and I always know before I leave how they are.

    I had cancer on one side so still get mamo on my on my non-cancer side). Last one I did after 2 scans they wanted to do an ultrasound (I have dene tissues so harder to read) to look at something and did it right there and I was able to find out ok and a cyst which is benign thing. and did not have to worry about it. They marked it for next year so they know and can watch it.

    Where I go is affiliated with our big hospital system here.

    Thanks for the helpful responses. I am in menopause and my breast is sore so I am glad we are following up and hope the mammogram helps get to the bottom of this and an MRI isn’t required.

    The most common reason for bloody discharge from a single duct is a papilloma-a “warty” type growth. They are usually benign, but can be in an associated area of DCIS or other cancer about 20% of the time. The MRI is likely in the possible queue because papillomas tend to be tiny and not well visualized or seen at all in mammogram and or sonogram

    Thanks so much. I had my diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound today and it looks like I have debris-filled enlarged ducts and will need an MRI (which for some reason I am really dreading).

    The breast MRI is kind of an odd thing though not too bad. It's another boobs under the table test and I hate those though that part of things wasn't uncomfortable. The dye was uncomfortable when they sent that through the latter part of the test though it didn't last long. My head was not in the machine if that matters to you....some get claustrophobic with these things... The tech gave info on how long each part of the test would last which I used as gages and opportunities to go into a zone - just a means of coping if any part of that makes sense and could be helpful/useful to you....     The MRI can be really uncomfortable if you don't get positioned just right. Don't let the technician rush you; give yourself time to adjust to what works for you - within the limits of what they need for the MRI, of course.

    I had my MRI on Monday and heard back on Thursday that the MRI didn’t show anything suspicious which sounds great but the nurse said the breast specialist would like to see me on Tuesday to do an ultrasound and talk and at my previous visit the doctor had mentioned possibly having a biopsy. Can areas be precursors to cancer and more aggressive doctors suggest biopsy etc.? I realize this is all a guess but wondered if anyone had thoughts/feedback. Thank you!

    If your tissues are dense they may be able to get a better look at something with an ultrasound and not as invasive. Where I get mine done they read it right there and the doctor comes in and talks to me after reading it. If you are still unsure after meeting with them you can get a second opinion and it is your right to do so for your own piece of mnd.

    Great news on the MRI, sounds like doctor is being proactive and making sure to fully address the concerns. Yes one big benefit to the US is they typically tell you what's going on right then so you don't have to wait for results or to know they would like to do a biopsy.

    I would believe what you were told that all looks pretty good. The additional precaution may be due to even a benign issue they want to make sure of. On my MRI an additional area showed up other than the DCIS. They would have biopsied that though I already decided on a BMX so there was no need. Upon final pathology the additional area turned out to be benign and precancerous stuff.... different kinds of things... It may be something like that this is not a worry though something they want a closer look at???? Please let us know how the appointment goes....
