I'm 38 and undergoing early BC treatment....I've just finished up on chemo and after finding out I have a gene mutation I'm now looking at having a bilateral mastectomy and recon also. As I have a larger (and heavier) breast, mine needs to be a skin reducing one. Can anyone kindly share there experience of having this? And anything you would recommend. I'm so very grateful for any advise. x

Hi Daisy - I had a skin/nipple sparing BMX with immediate DIEP flap recon last year - since I didn’t have as much abdominal fat as I had breast tissue (was large DD now smaller D) I know there was extra skin they would have had to remove although I never heard the term ‘skin reducing’ used to describe my case. May I ask what reconstruction you are considering?

Hi Abigail, thank you so much for sharing this....I'm pleased to hear you were able to have a DIEP flap, certainly is a more sustainable and more natural route to go.

Hi Daisy, yes, I was glad I could have this type on recon but it was a long healing process. But no matter what you decide on, please make sure the PS you choose has a lot of experience doing that type of recon (and shows you pictures of results from other patients to prove his/her skill). I hope that whatever action you decide on will give you the best outcome.
