It's even colder today than yesterday. If I crawled into my freezer, I would be 20 degrees warmer than I'd be if I were outside!!!! I did a 45 minute indoor walking DVD just now & will go to Barre Sculpt tonight. I am officially missing my usual winter vacation to warmer climes!!!
-
My friends, I got a letter from my care team at St. Luke's. Turns out they've determined that I am high risk and need to get the first dose of the vaccine. So that will happen on Sunday.
I'm a little stunned, I don't think of myself as being high risk but they think otherwise. But I am glad I'm getting it, don't get me wrong. Very glad.
-
I am so glad you can get the shot, edj!!!
-
I want knishes. Should anyone want to share a recipe...
And may as well ask the group here for ideas for BEST Valentine's dessert? DH is trying really hard to lose the weight he gained while he was stress-eating and not taking care of himself while taking care of me, so the calories need to really be worth it!
Yesterday I had a HARD strength workout (for me) and we got through her whole planned workout faster than she thought we (royal we?) would. I am gaining strength! WOOHOOO! And the Romanian Dead Lifts (well single leg lifts, anyways) that she has had me doing with (knockoff) TRX straps? I am hardly having to rely on the straps at all to keep my balance! At least relative to where I started. I rowed 1500 after just to keep up my goal of rowing every day. Today I am pretty sure I hurt in muscles that I didn't even know I had!
Today I rowed 6400 meters. And am now ready for a hot bath
Hope everyone has a great day! We only got about 4" of snow today, so had to clear off my car after work but no shoveling.
-
YesIam - please message me your email and I will email the recipes. Anyone else as well. It is easier I think than trying to post photos here. Not everything on my phone, picture wise transfers to my computer. Or let me see if I can log onto BCO from my phone. I only make the potato knishes - the recipe calls for egg (rather than milk since its a kosher cookbook) - but the cookbook is from the 1970s so alternative milks weren't around. I use almond milk. The dough is really easy to make. I remember my grandmother making them when I was a little girl and I've been making them since I got married almost 44 years ago, so for me its easy.
Ruth - it's brutally cold by you. It's coming my way.
edj - glad you are getting the shot.
Chevy and Jazzy - funny pot stories!
-
YesIamadragon, those pecan bars I mentioned and posted the recipe for are amazing. They remind me just a little of pecan pie so if you don't care for that, these won't suit. And you certainly don't have to make them vegan. Just use normal butter and replace the brown rice syrup with corn syrup.
-
Walked on the track at my fitness center this morning, will go back to Zumba tonight. Still really cold & sounds like it will get worse before it gets better. At least we aren't in the storm track!
-
Busy day today - mostly screen time and in between start to catch up on required paperwork. 7:30 phone call with my interns university professor for mid year evaluation, meeting 8-9:30, 11:30 - 12 and interviews for new SPs for next year 12-3:30. to get a walk in, I'll need to walk by 10:45. Right now its 10-12F so hopefully the sun will come out and warm it up a bit by then. High is 36 and gets colder as the week goes on - by Sunday night 9F below but weather reporter said the numbers could change to colder .Not sure about snow for the city. When it's that cold, we usually don't get snow as its so dry.
Ruth - hope it warms up by you so you can walk the grand puppies.
Everyone stay safe and stay warm.
-
It's getting colder every day until Monday (when it will rise to zero). The high is -8 today. We did take the puppies for a car ride yesterday and stopped by the dog park so they could zoom around for about 8 minutes. Maybe we'll do that again today. Pound this morning, Barre Sculpt and Dance2fit this evening. I've got to keep moving to stay warm!!
-
Our arctic blast continues and, like Ruth, be even worse this weekend. Our projected high on Saturday is 4 F (don't get me started on the wind chill) and Sunday will be zero. Oh and more snow on Sunday although it's so cold and so dry, the snow we've been getting is like powdered sugar.
The directions for me to get my first vaccine are so oddly specific--I have to be there 5 minutes ahead of time but must wait in my car (it will be minus 1 then with the wind chill at -19) and I must wear a short sleeve shirt. OK! I'll have that short sleeve shirt on under my Lands End coat that I got while living in Boston, it goes almost to my ankles and is incredible at blocking cold and wind.
Today's a rest day and for once, I took it
-
I get my first shot next Thursday. Whoo Hoo!!
-
I have one of those Lands End commuter coats...it is the best and on the Boston T you look right at home!
Hope to get my mother to the shot clinic on Saturday, but just got a message that they might call off the clinic due to the cold...such as it is for SE Virginia...a couple of inches of snow followed by 1/2 inch of ice in the overnight tonight. My annual mammogram is tomorrow first thing... hope I can make it, we do have an all wheel drive sedan, but that doesn't do a lot of good on ice.
Have gotten to the gym 4 of 5 days this week...TT
-
TrmTab, you knew exactly which one it was! And yes, I looked like everyone else on the Orange Line
-
Green Line here...family from Newton.
-
Honestly, nothing does well on sheet ice. Even with studded snows it really is better to just stay home!
I did my one hour strength personal training followed by a hard rowing workout for an hour. It will be interesting to see if I can even get out of bed in the morning! But I have to go in to work. I feel like my balance is worse in the cold (anyone else?) and supposed to be just below zero actual temp with windchills to -20 to -30 when I am headed in. No cute outfit tomorrow! But so hard to dress because my office will undoubtably be 90 degrees and I will need the window wide open even at those temps
Old buildings
Hope everyone stays well and safe!

Happy for everyone who is getting a COVID vaccine! My mom has had both doses and reported few S/E, mostly an upset stomach and diarrhea. They are starting 20-minute in-person visits next week! I'll get to see mom on Weds. Masked, of course, and separated by a plexiglass barrier so no hugs but we are both looking forward to it.
Did treadmill on Tuesday (45 mins) and spent most of Weds in cable TV hell. Our provider is discontinuing service next month. Had to figure out and sign up for a new service. Blah! Got on the treadmill today but left foot was sore (I think I need new insoles in my sneakers) so stopped after 20 mins.
Thanks for supporting Lands' End. Their HQ is in the next county over and I know many people who work there.
-
Oh Lands End clothing lasts forever. I have a pair of well I guess they're yoga pants but I wear them in public, and they are at least 6 years old. My commuter coat is 11 years old. I had a packable down coat, to the knees with a belt and the only reason I don't have it now is b/c I lost nearly 25 pounds thanks to menopause and it was much too big. So I donated it to one of the fall coat donation drives. The commuter coat is too bit also, but because it's shapeless, it doesn't matter.
-
Its a balmy 5 degrees. Monday morning it will be 9 below. Will be bundling up lots of layers for walks.
I have 2 Lands End down vests and long down coat with a hood. Then I have several Eddie Bauer down vests and jackets, the less puffy ones. All bought on sale for less than half price. It seems both companies always have a sale going. If I get cold in the house or at work, I put on one of the vests - then it comes off as I get hot and then it goes back on, then off.......
Going to make Hamentashen today so I can mail to DD and SIL. Hope they arrive faster than his birthday card which took 3+ weeks!
Today is my usual Friday - grocery store, clean and cooking and add the trip to the post office.
Stay safe and stay warm.
-
Sahara dust in the haze
Blue skies
More snow
Went running in the snow and snowshoeing. Now it's too cold to go out.
Happy Chinese New Year of the Ox to all!
-
Beautiful pictures, Heidi!
The air temperature is -27 right now & I don't even want to check the windchill. This morning, I will walk around the track at my fitness center followed by Yogi Breathing & Nidra. And as much as I don't want to run around, I need to get some groceries this afternoon. Brrrr.......
-
Hamentashen - yum. What do you fill yours with, Karen? Happy (early) Purim.
Great pix HeidiHill. Your dog almost looks like a deer in the first pic.
We got about an inch of snow overnight but I'm going to wait until it "warms up" a little to shovel. It's supposed to hit zero degrees around 10AM.
-
Super HeidiHill!
Taught Pilates and at 5:00 taking a Pilates class in San Diego with my sis. Here is what it looks like where I live from this cold blast.
-
Love the photos! Our snow isn't much but it's also not going anywhere
We're close to our high of 8F today, it's 6 right now and then our temps fall off the cliff over the weekend. We ran all our errands already so we can just stay home. I imagine this month's heating bill will be awful. Just glad we have the means to stay warm.
-
Well I got to my mammogram this morning...have already got the all clear back - BiRads 2...I doubt I will ever see 1 again, but 2 gives me a pass for a year. The hospital was built new 10 years ago from an in town site to one 10 miles out...the only bad place weather wise was the parking lot of the hospital, it was horrible. Go figure. Stay safe everyone...TT
Oh, I have perhaps 6 Lands End coats from Rain Coat to packable puffer to various stages of down jacket/coat/commuter coat. Once it is in the low 60's I am reaching for a jacket and every 10 degrees cooler I need an upgrade to something warmer. While that sounds indulgent as I write this, they have all been bought on sale and many are over 20 years old...and still going. At 5'8" my weight can go up and down some but a coat still works.
-
Lilac and Heidi gorgeous photos. TrmTab - great news.
Please keep my SIL in your thoughts/prayers/wishes - he's been in the hospital going on 3 weeks Sunday and dealing with gall bladder issues for 4 months now as well as other issues including loosing too much weight while in the hospital. He is very high risk for surgery but most likely having gall bladder surgery next week. None of the options presented to him are very good - live with chronic pain, put in a stent with a big risk of infection and more surgeries or have his gall bladder out. Needless to say, he is scared beyond scared and so is my daughter. She has been amazing through this all taking care of him and working. But my daughter is mentally and physically exhausted. It breaks my heart that I can't be with them (Covid quarantine in Canada)- to keep her company at home at night and cook etc for her. She needs a hug and time with mommy!! We talked to his mother this afternoon and she asked what she could do for my daughter - beyond what they are already doing. I said, she just needs Mommy and she got it. My SIL told me a few days ago that we raised an amazing daughter and thanking us because she's been taking such good care of him.
Glad for the long week-end as I'm worn out today. Mostly worry for SIL and DD. Didn't even check work emails today which I often do on Fridays. Baked Hamentashen so I could mail them to DD and SIL. Hope they get there faster than his b'day card which took over 3 weeks. I have about 10 Hamentashen for DH and me - not sure I'll make more so I needed to figure out what I can do with the rest of the dough as I have lots left. Will put them in the freezer till the last week of this month just before Purim.Bitter cold here the next few days with sub zero temps at night. Have a good week-end.
-
Oh I will send all good wishes to your daughter and SIL!
Meanwhile, I just googled Hamentashen. Those look yummy! I find that Eastern European Jewish and Eastern European Catholic (DH's family) seems very similar, or even the same-by-a-different name.
Is Purim always so early? I certainly wouldn't want to be out in a booth in this weather we are having here!
-
Oh Karen, I hope and pray they can get things under control for your SIL! Could they remove the gallbladder through a laparoscopy surgery. That would be less invasive. I feel so sorry for your daughter too. What a stressful situation for all. Sending you a hug too!
-
A hard PiYo class this morning, now I need to get on the treadmill for awhile & do some house cleaning. We are babysitting the grand puppies tonight. It's going to be too cold to be outside so we will have to run around the house!
-
TrmTab, congrats on the clean scan. Karen, sending all the positive thoughts to your SIL and daughter
-
Hoping for good for you SIL and daughter.
I skipped the gym this week, I've never done that before. Got myself there today. Think my mind is back in be-healthy mode, the bitter cold and negative culture at work won out this week sadly.
