edited February 2021 in Waiting for Test Results

Today I had the pleasure of my first two biopsies, mri guided, and will remain hopeful that news is good. I was just so happy to get the biopsy done, having waited almost a month and having another facility cancel my previously scheduled appt last week because of snow...

My appt was actually for the right side, and when the radiologist reviewed my mri file (from another facility) she felt it best to also biopsy the non-mass enhancement in the left breast. This actually made me very happy as my previous mri was done for issues on the left side and they found the right side issue at that time. It was also incredibly kind of the mri crew to quickly facilitate the script and procedures. I am actually at peace just knowing I am moving forward. Hopefully my lovely hematoma and slightly bleeding incisions heal quickly.

I’ve done tons of reading the past month to educate myself in case it’s bad news so I’ll have an idea of what to expect and ask.I am thankful for this community as It has provided some of that insight. If I end up with benign or malignant results, I have so much more respect for all who have gone thru this, and wish everyone the best of outcomes. Try to stay positive, I know it’s not always easy to do. :

    Hi JSB93,

I hope your results come back quickly and are benign. Do you have a follow-up appointment to get the results?

Yeah, those hematomas...I never knew breasts could be so technicolor for so long, or that gravity works on the bruising, letting it settle to the bottom.

    Hang in there

    Hi MelissaDallas,

Thank you! Yes, I also didn’t realize how much incisions to the breast bleed. My hematoma is a beautiful purple. I have lots of back issues, so this morning the repercussions of being in the comfy mri position so long yesterday are kicking in. Wish I could take my Motrin, Tylenol doesn’t help my back as well.

My incisions didn’t bleed much, but bothMRIs and stereotactic biopsy tables really make my back, sternum, shoulders and neck hurt.

Wishing good luck to you. Glad the biopsy's are done. I too, had 2 in one day expecting only to do 1. While I felt a little blindsided, it was good to see another set of eyes on my imaging before the procedure which prompted the change.

We are hoping for good news right with ya! You have an attitude that was similar to mine....let's look at it all and get things rolling. I always felt grateful....and still do....that we found what we did and took care of it. I had an MRI biopsy that was a benign finding....a papilloma...hoping both of yours are!

I found that pressure helps control swelling. A rolled-up child's sock shoved in your bra next to the biopsy site should help, although I'm not sure if it's as effective if it's not done right away.

Thank you, everyone, for your good wishes! And Alice for the pressure suggestion.

I have been blessed with a “negative for malignancy” reading! (Wording below) Obviously a huge relief. My PCP still wants me to use a BS for consult and future care. I am concerned with the reference for hyperplasia, and not sure what a histiocytic reaction is. Also, tell me if I am crazy, but if this had been a malignant result I would’ve wanted a second pathological read. I feel I should have the slides read somewhere else to confirm there is no malignancy. Am I being overly cautious? I have had years of callbacks and areas they watch, and just don’t want to write this off as being good if I should double check the results. With my very dense breasts I feel at some point in the future the results will not be favorable

Results: Breast tissue with fibrocystic change, focal usual ductal hyperplasia and focal histiocytic reaction. Negative for atypia or malignancy.

JSB - congrats! A histiocytic reaction is a localized area of certain kinds of white blood cells which indicate an area of inflammation. They may just be inflammatory or they may proceed to a malignant change. You need to do whatever gives you the greatest peace of mind. I think a BS consult is a good idea & if you ask the questions, he/she might give you insight into what kind of surveillance you should have over time. If a second reading by a pathologist will give you peace, don't hesitate. Hopefully, this will be the end of this journey for you. But, if its not, you'll want to know you did everything you wanted.

    Stay well,

    Jane

"Usual ductal hyperplasia" is a common condition found in 20% of benign biopsies. As cells evolve, it is the first step in abnormality, several steps away from an invasive cancer diagnosis. Most usual ductal hyperplasia never evolves to become ADH (the next stage of cell abnormality) and only about 25% of ADH continues to become DCIS. "Focal" means that there is just a single small area of usual ductal hyperplasia, i.e. it is not widespread or diffuse.

Honestly, I've been on this site for 16 years, and I don't think I've ever seen someone get a second pathology assessment for usual ductal hyperplasia. So to your question, "Am I being overly cautious?", I'd say "Yes, you are."

Most of us have some crap in our breasts that is never discovered until we have a biopsy. My pathlogy reports read like a pathology textbook, I've had so many different conditions - most benign and harmless. I'm not unusual. You have a benign result. Congratulations!
