What helps your constipation?

Ever since starting Letrozole I have had this issue. Never had it before Letrozole, so I am blaming it. Anyway, it has been helped by eating a prune daily. But lately I have had to increase to 2 prunes daily and it seems that may not be enough. What helps you?

I take a generic of Miralax every day. That seems to be the only thing that works for me. If I go too much in a day, I do take a day off.

I do a half dose of generic miralax daily. Depends on what I’ve eaten. Salads, veggies, fruit, I’m usually ok. But DH has bone Mets, a lot of times he’s not hungry for much, and we get take out. Not fast food, but not the best either. I hate to prepare for one.

cm2020, what works for me is lots of water each day and, when needed, dried fruit midafternoon (my preference is figs and mangoes). Currently I am not eating the dried fruit because in the last 4 months I've had two rounds of an antibiotic known for causing diarrhea even sometime later. Have not had the diarrhea but don't need the dried fruit either. Hope this isn't TMI!

Thank you guys so much! Never TMI! I am a nurse (non practicing now) so TMI isn't a thing in my world.

You know, I thought there was a thread somewhere addressing this but couldn't find it. Thank you MinusTwo! I will check it out.

Hi, My friend who is our age told me she takes Magnesium for constipation while on Letrozole. She just started her 10th year and swears by it. I'm not sure if it is magnesium citrate or oxide.

Interesting flashlight - I just posted on the other thread that I take 250 mg of Magnesium per day - mostly for let cramps but it does work with constipation. I started out with 500 mg, but after I was no longer on any meds, that was too much so I downgraded.

Also I started with Mag Oxide and recently switched to Mag Citrate since it supposedly has better availability in your system.

cm, another no longer practicing nurse here! I know which side of the bed I prefer being on , but BC gave me no choice! Actually, I retired several years before BC and found out I had a lot to learn.

Beaverntx...It's nice to see another nurse here. Yeah, I prefer the other side of the bed too.

I would try Miralax. It is safe to take long-term because it is not habit-forming and just adds water to the bowel (according to my GI and CRS's). I take it now for other issues (HORRIBLE anal fissures caused by these anti-estrogen drugs most likely... still trying to figure that out). When I stopped Tamoxifen (currently take a break from it), I got HORRIBLE constipation for some reason, so I had to start Miralax. I just take it once a day (3/4 of a full dose) and it helps a lot. I was taking Colace, but I found it barely did anything for me. Also, I eat several prunes a day. One is not enough to do anything. I would up it to 3-4 if you can handle it without a lot of cramping. Your body eventually adjusts to it and the cramps should ease off.

You can also try fiber supplements. I don't take them since I eat enough fiber through diet, though. I tried Metamucil once and it bulked up my stool too much to be useful for me (caused me to re-tear my fissures, so I stopped). It works differently for everyone, though.

Just make sure to drink a LOT of water with the Miralax. Otherwise, it won't work well.

I hope you feel better soon! Constipation and butt issues are awful. I've been struggling with fissures issues for almost two years now after starting Tamoxifen and some days I just want to die. So I understand how awful it is.

Oh Peridot! What a painful mess you have been through. I took Miralax 2 days in a row and got results (felt better too). I didn't take it today...and should have. I do drink a whole lot of water throughout the day (about 96 oz) plus decaf coffee and now have added in smooth move tea. Edit: thanks for the advice on the prunes...i will definitely increase to 3-4.

During chemo and after surgeries senakot and sautéed artichoke hearts always did the trick.

Celery juice first thing in am works well too!

Getting backed up is the worst. Hoping smooth sailing to all!

I am not on Letrozole (I am on Anastrozole) but sometimes I get serious constipation that I believe it's caused by calcium supplementation. Veggies work for me: cauliflower, kale, broccoli, arugula; generally, I try to eat a diet high in fiber, with carbs coming from fresh fruit, dried fruit (prunes, dates, dried apricots, dried figs), beans of all sorts. I avoid white rice and white bread -even brown rice or whole bread I eat very little of. No milk but yogurt and kefir instead. Drink teas, herbal and not, all day. Exercise also helps. This plan keeps me regular.
