I had small non invasive cancer in my left breast treated with lumpectomy and radiation 15 yeas ago. The cancer has returned. This time I need a mastectomy . The Plastic surgeon highly recommended will not do any reconstruction at the time of surgery due to previous radiation risk of infection. She wants me to wait 3 or 4 months the perform reconstruction 5 hour surgery 3 days in hospital, Has anyone had this recommendation and had problems with implant at time of mastectomy

Sue - I answered on the other thread you started, where you didn't mention the PS is concerned about infection OR that he/she would do recon later. Both of those things sound like a sensible plan. But I'd still get a 2nd opinion.

    Hello

I was told the same thing by PS. Actually was told to wait about a year. Thin skin due to radiation and possible infection. Last BC was 2016 lumpectomy 2017 chemo and rads. Due to the rads unable to get the reconstruction at this time. :(. I've made up in my mind no reconstruction my body doesn't do well with foreign objects inside. Last time I got a port and was in the hospital for 10 days with staph infection. It was brutal. So for me I'm going to have to be okay with prosthesis.

    Hi Ladies,

I just found this website today and have been checking things out. It's been quite a whirlwind, but I just had a bilateral mastectomy three (3) weeks ago. The plan was to have the mastectomy the first part of the surgery and start the reconstruction the second half of the surgery. But they found more bad nodes than anticipated so they couldn't start the reconstruction part. Now I have to have chemo, which I have no idea how much since I don't meet with the oncologist until tomorrow. Then supposedly will come the radiation. Based on your posts, it sounds like it may be a long time before I can get the reconstruction. The surgeon that did the mastectomy said she left extra skin for the reconstruction and that it would be a 'few' months. That's maybe not the case....

To be honest, I'm a little bit lost here. If I have to wait a year or more before reconstruction maybe I won't want the reconstruction, especially based on some of the other posts I've read about reconstruction. I was totally miserable when I had the drain tubes in. I just got a port put in and it's awful. Is it going to feel like that when I get the expanders/prothesis in?

This is so much to take in....I have to get up on the medical terms and acronyms. Can you share some thoughts about who I should ask my questions to or where to start? Ask the mastectomy surgeon? The reconstruction surgeon? The oncologist?

Any info or direction would be appreciated.....
