Mamm & US show Arch. Dist. Stereostatic biopsy Jan 14th
Hi all. This is my second time here looking for support from you amazing folks. So on my annual 3D mammogram, follow up diagnostic mammogram, and US, I have an architectural distortion. I saw it on the screen. The "center" was dark. The radiologist was great and honest. She said she is worried because it's new. It is in the same breast with a clip from a rather difficult US guided biopsy on a cyst cluster. I asked if it could be a scar from that. She thinks not likely since that was 2 years ago and this AD wasn't there last year. Stereostatic biopsy scheduled for Jan 14th. I will be recovering from a complete hysterectomy I'm having Jan 6th. There is a slight chance that I could have ovarian cancer. I live alone but have a wonderful support system and friends who are survivors. I know that breast cancer is more treatable these days and I'm grateful for you guys posting here. I think I'm doing pretty well. 46, paternal gma had BC in her late 70s. I'm mainly just venting. Baby steps. Edited to add moderately dense breasts, fibrocystic changes, radiologist said nodes in my armpit looked ok. They took pics of the nodes too.

I'll let some of the others talk more about the medical aspects. I just want to welcome you back while I know that has been due to worrisome news. I'm also glad you knew where to turn since you've been here before. Great you have a good support system it sounds like you trust and are comfortable with as well. So you have about a 2 week wait prior to your biopsy.... Hopefully you have some things to help you cope and distract during that time, including enjoyable activities/hobbies? Check out some of the other forums here if you have downtime you're struggling with - there are some "lighter" forums such as one related to dogs or cats or humor..... Once in awhile I've even looked up YouTube cat videos...

Thank you so much for your reply. I am trying to focus on my "nest" for recovery after the hysterectomy. I'm struggling on and off right now with not obsessing. I'm grateful that I had my mammogram, grateful for good radiologist, hoping if cancer it is caught early. I have rescue dogs to care for and hobbies, yes. The timing of having so much down time due to the hysterectomy before the biopsy is concerning me bevause of my moderate anxiety on a normal day. Normally work would distract me. Thanks for the tips of fun stuff to look at on here!

Just an update. I had the stereotatic biopsy (sp?) yesterday and will get results Tuesday with a breast surgeon (same one I saw 2 years ago). I saw the image of the assymetry or AD on xray and it didn't look as big and scary as it looked on US. The team doing the biopsy was very nice. I go to a great breast center and I'm grateful for that. They were able to get some calcifications from the biopsy area too. I haven't asked for reports or BIRAD ratings or anything. I learned my lesson on that 2 years ago. The area was 1.3 cm from my biopsy 2 years ago so I am hoping for something related to that although the radiologist who did the US said if it was related it should have been there last year. I'm grateful that I don't have to wait too long and will update here when I know more. This site has been such a source of support for me and maybe my experience can help someone else. For me, an obsessive type personality, NOT getting the reports and size, etc. seems to be helping me cope more this time versus 2 years ago.

Glad the biopsy is over for you. Nice will you be with your BS to go over results. It sounds like you're preparing yourself while keeping yourself grounded as well. Might just be the best combination while you're in limbo. I hope the recovery from your hysterectomy is going well... Sounds like you know you and what helps/doesn't as you move through the next several days. Thanks for checking back in and yes, your posts will help others!!! and yes please let us know how your appointment next week goes! Enjoy your weekend! I saw some references to sports on another post I read today. I don't know where you are from tho to borrow from that if you're a football fan there are play-off games this weekend. Or if you don't have anything else to do this weekend, whether or not you are a sports fan, you could possibly tune in and root for the Cleveland Browns!!!!!!!! : )

The biopsy revealed Stage 1 Grade 1 IDC and DCIS. I'm still in the testing and meeting doctors stage. I was hoping you might share how you decided on double mastectomy?

Hi Jencandothis: We have a very similar journey in our BC. I had new arch. dist. last January and was diagnosed with Stage one, Grade one, less than a cm. I had lumpectomy followed by radiation since the size was so small and the grade/stage was 1. i had BC 12 years prior on other breast and had the same treatment. The decision on how or what to have done is very personal. I did not want overkill for my small cancer nor did I want to loose my breasts unless it was absolutely necessary. I have a huge family history but genetic testing was all negative. I also had to have a hysterectomy a few years back due to large (baseball size) slightly suspicious mass on my ovary. Fortunately it was benign. I had robotic surgery which was a very easy to recover from. I know some people can't have robotic surgery but I am hoping that is an option for you. Good luck in your new journey and keep us posted.

Jen, if you are trying to decide between a lumpectomy or UMX vs. a BMX, you might want to read here and go through the list of considerations:
Topic: Considerations: Lumpectomy w/Rads vs. UMX vs. BMX
.
It's such a individual decision - no two of us are alike, and we all have different diagnoses, different personal and family health histories, different fears and concerns, different definitions of risk, and different risk tolerances. There can be medical reasons for choosing one option over the other, or there can be personal/emotional reasons. What's most important is that you make the decision that's right for you. The list of considerations might help with that.

Sorry to hear about the IDC Jen! Grade 1 is a positive and the DCIS will be much less for you to worry about - priority will be the IDC. When you get more info it will help to add this to your profile (somewhere around there) and make it public if you're comfortable. It will help going forward as others are responding to more specifics of your situation.
Yes, Beesie is correct on what surgery choice you ultimately make is very personal. The link she provided will be very helpful as you "hear" from others and see how that resonates or doesn't with you and your situation. I will share my choice process though our situations are very different. I solely had DCIS and was unable to have radiation due to a scleroderma diagnosis. Because of my age my surgeon said lumpectomy was not an option without radiation. I was fine with that - I already decided on a BMX before meeting her. She was my second opinion surgeon. Because I'm in my late 50's and was larger busted I really could not fathom the idea, physical comfort-wise, of walking around with one large gravity-laden breast. Emotionally I would not have been comfortable either, mostly when changing clothes, etc. I also did not want to mess with prosthetics, etc. The other important factor was due to scleroderma I knew well before diagnosed with DCIS that I was never taking the chance of implants, etc..... seen issues others had on the scleroderma boards. I have wound healing difficulties too so was not interested in lots of surgery if I used my own tissue. Sooooooo BMX - going flat - Done and quite happy with that.... Our situations are quite different.... Important you hear your surgeon's suggestion(s), continue doing your own research on options and decide what you are most comfortable with!

Thank you!. My hysterectomy was robotic and I'm doing very well just over 4 weeks out.

Thank you quinnie, Beesie, and LivinLife. I can see my dx in my signature. I'll go check my settings. Thank you for all of your feedback. I will def dig into that link, Beesie, this weekend.
