Anyone have HSIL along with breast cancer?

I was scheduled for my annual pap in August, just a few days after I started chemo. My OB knew I had started chemo, but wanted me to go ahead with the pap, which ended up finding abnormal cells. The report said it could not ruled out HSIL and recommended a colposcopy. (HSIL is a pre-cancerous lesion that could turn into cervical cancer.)

Six months later she scheduled me for a colposcopy, which I had a couple of weeks ago. My MO assured me that 99% of cervical cancers were associated with HPV, and I am negative for HPV, but he wanted me to go ahead with the colposcopy to be sure. The assumption was that the chemo caused the abnormal cells and the colposcopy wouldn’t find anything.

I got my colposcopy pathology report yesterday evening in my mychart and now I have questions. The report says they found “fragments of” abnormal cells that were “highly suspicious” of an HSIL lesion.

I know realistically I have to just wait for the doctors to review the information and call me. I have googled around reputable medical websites trying to find out more information, but most of the medical jargon is hard to understand. Although I have at least learned that HSIL in and of itself is easily treatable and not necessarily a big deal.

Anyone have any input? I’m partially writing to see if anyone else has gone through something similar, and partially writing because writing it out helps me process information and worry.

Hi Melbo, I am sorry for your worries. My understanding, in reading a little, is that when more sensitive than the most common assays are run on HSIL negative samples for HPV, that most of them do turn out to be positive, albeit for some of the less common HPV variants.

What I would suggest, while you wait for responses here and since there is a good possibility that the HSIL and breast cancer are very likely unrelated, is to go to the Hyster Sisters website and create an account and talk with members there. It is a fabulous site with discussion threads much like BCO, but for gynecology issues, and you will likely find more women there in similar situations. I had a really rare ovarian cancer and even connected there with others who had it.

thanks for the response Melissa! (Which is also my name.) :)

I checked out the hyster sister site and I’ve been doing a lot of reading about HSIL. Overall it doesn’t seem to be a huge deal, but I’m still a touch concerned because of the negative HPV test. Maybe it was a false negative, which would at least make a little more sense out of the situation. I’m still waiting to hear back from the doctor on the next steps, but wait and re-test might be the best option since I start radiation next week. The other option would likely be a LEEP procedure scheduled for after I finish radiation

Perhaps as long as a lot of things are taking these days the doctor can go ahead and schedule the leep procedure out in April or so.

Here’s the study I read on most HPV negatives not really being negative in HSIL, etc.
