Considering hysterectomy - anyone regret having one?

Options

I've been on tamoxifen for maybe 15 - 20 months? but only taking 10 mg / day. I've been post-menopause since 2014. I've had a very, very small amount of bleeding. Had uterine ultrasound which shows fibroids. Endometrial lining still OK. I had a uterine biopsy which showed polyp, but no cancer cells seen.

I will be having hip surgery this year to revise one of my hip replacements that is 20 years old. They prefer that I not have other surgery for a period of time after hip replacement revision due to risk of infection lodging in the prosthesis.

My PCP has suggested that I have a hysterectomy before my hip surgery. Gynecologist is fine with that, but did ask me to ask med onc about removing ovaries at the same time. Appt with med onc is tomorrow.

Tamoxifen doesn't seem to cause increase in chance of ovarian cancer. I've read that ovaries continue to produce other hormones even after menopause. I've also read that my fat cells produce a lot of estrogen - and maybe more than my ovaries??

So, at this point, I'm thinking I won't have ovaries removed at the same time.

I'm seriously considering having the hysterectomy. I'm interested in hearing whether others who have opted to have hysterectomies are glad that they had them.

Thanks!

I had a hysterectomy because of a prolapsed uterus and an 100% happy that I did so (only sorry I didn't do it sooner!). I did not have my ovaries removed. I was many year past menopause & long past my cancer diagnosis too (also I don't have a family history of cancer).

I had a total hysterectomy, including tubes and ovaries, at my request, after being diagnosed with a thickened endometrium before starting Tamoxifen. After having breast cancer and pre malignant colon polyps (twice), I figured the uterus, etc. were basically "place holders", and knowing that ovarian cancer often does not become symptomatic until very late, decided to have them removed too. Path report indicated pre malignant cells in the uterine wall and described the ovaries as senescent! For me, it was an easy surgery and recovery.

I had a total hysterectomy (everything but the vagina) in 2008 because I had endometrial cancer. I was 58 and still not menopausal. Except for a few night sweats in the first month, I never had any heat wave problems or other symptoms of suddenly being without those parts. I never took any HRTs after, either - the oncology GYN said they would be a bad idea for me. The only long-term problem I had that might be related is thinning hair, but I started taking biotin a few years ago and it's improved a bit to where I'm not shedding on everything.

I still must have been cranking out hormones, though, since I was ER+ (99)/PR+ (97) at my breast cancer diagnosis in 2018.

Hi Dorothy B, I had a total vaginal hysterectomy last Feb. everything out. My Urogyn said most ovarian cancers start in the fallopian tubes. I had an enlarged uterus and many fibroids. The hysterectomy was a nothing surgery for me and the best decision. I wish I had done it sooner. After 2-weeks you can drive. The hardest part is not bending. You have to walk as much as possible. I would put at least 4 -6 weeks between both surgical procedures. I'm sure you will have Rehab after the hip surgery and you might need to bend to do the exercises. Best wishes to you.

    Thanks all!

Flashlight - I am tentatively thinking hysterectomy in Feb and hip surgery in July (because July, Aug and early Sept are too hot to do things outside)

    Hi Dorothy B!

I too had laparoscopic total hysterectomy (cervix, uterus) and BSO (ovaries and tubes). I was just over one year off hormones and was one year on Aromatase Inhibitor when I had the surgery. I do not notice a difference without these body parts. And, less stuff that can kill me now:-). I had breast reconstruction at the same time. Recovery boring, but not really painful. Total pelvic rest for 8 weeks. No lifting anything over 5 pounds for 6 weeks, as I recall (maybe 7?).

Get that uterus with polyp and fibroids out! Polyps and fibroids usually benign, but not always. Yours is probably fine, but with a cancer history and being post menopausal, I would remove my uterus is a heartbeat! My sister and good friend both had malignant results after their hysterectomies. No indication for either of them that their polyp/fibroids were anything sinister.

My husband has had both hips replaced. My sister had right hip replaced. My mom had right hip replaced. All in the past 2 years. All had anterior hip replacement. All went fantastically! Very little need for pain meds. All up and walking (with walker or cane) first day. All driving at two weeks. The surgeries were so helpful to them all. Absolutely improved their quality of life! All extremely happy with their results.

    Good luck!!!!

Ditched the uterus and left ovary when I was 43, well before menopause and I do not miss either organ at all. I do still have my right ovary (left ovary had issues, lots of scar tissue from an eptopic pregnancy).

I had oophorectomy/salpingectomy and wish I had done it all then. Really want it gone, but don’t want another surgery. Recovery from the ooph was pretty easy and uncomplicated.

I had an oophorectomy last year and I regret not persisting to have a hysterectomy. I don't think there is any importance of the uterus after the ovaries are out and you are done with having kids. Just extra exams to check if cancer hs spread in uterus.

Met with new medical oncologist today. I really like him :) He convinced me that it would be a good plan to remove the ovaries at the same time.

I, too, had a hysterectomy - kept my ovaries and cervix. Maybe I should have had totally everything removed, so that I would never have to have another PAP smear ever again. My MO relied on blood work to tell us when my ovaries had truly shut down.

The day of my hyster was one of the best days of my life! No regrets at all. There is a great forum called HysterSisters. They provided great information and support.

    Again, absolutely NO regrets.

I had a total hyster this past July. I am in my 40s. And the one thing I regret is all the anxiety I had beforehand. I didn’t want it. I would tear up about it. Fast forward— I’ve had minimal side effects and my quality of life is better because I don’t worry about what my ovaries are doing. I don’t worry about all that stuff getting cancer. It’s a new chapter. I’ve embraced it. I keep moving and I feel great! Good luck to you!!

Gosh, had hysterectomy and ooph 5 yrs ago. Cancer free after recurrence in 10/14 nodes. I've been so moody, not feeling 100 %, anxious lately but really need to not complain. I have a good qualityof life, healthy husband and son....I can hike 10 miles with my 11 yr old scout on any given day ( with sore feet after but doable!) Reading these posts reminds me to count blessings and mentality get over it. We are just coming off a year of covid, xtra job stress, my mothers health issues seem behind her for now...switching to the child to the care for an adult is hard. Love the honest posts reminding me how we dohave to worry about ovarian and uterine cancer anymore. Or deal with birth control or tampons. I would do it again. :)
