Sudden Inverted Nipple - 26 years old
I understand that an inverted nipple can be completely normal if someone has had one their whole life or developed during puberty, pregnancy/breast feeding, after surgery, or menopause. Besides being a classic symptom of breast cancer, can also be caused by infection (typically after nipple piercings or while breast feeding) or cysts (common in women in 35-45??).
My nipple suddenly inverted about 3-4 months ago and I didn't know it was a sign for breast cancer until I mentioned it to my mom (she's a nurse) a couple of weeks ago and she told me to get it examined immediately. I am 26 years old. I have never been pregnant. I have never had surgery or any piercings. After speaking to other nurses and nurse practitioners... I am not showing any symptoms of an infection and my only symptom is the inverted nipple. It is inside sometimes and normal sometimes, it may be in my head, but I think it's been more frequently been inside over time. I have a mammogram and ultrasound scheduled for Monday. I just want my expectations set at a realistic level.
Can anyone relate to this symptom and what was your outcome? Sudden inverted nipple (only symptom), no baby/pregnancy, no surgeries/nipple piercings, not going through menopause... and what was your outcome?
I appreciate any and all responses!

Welcome Sloan,
I am chiming in here because inverted nipple was my only sign that I had breast cancer. That said, I am also in my 60s, have had 3 children am am way past menopause so our situations are different. The good thing is you are getting it checked out and I’ll be able to move forward being an informed patient. I wish you the best of luck and if you find yourself needing support please come back as there is a lot of it here.

Hi sloan123 – I caught my own cancer after suddenly noticing a slightly inverted nipple. I was 37, had never been pregnant, no congenital issues, no piercings etc. My doctor said barring other factors, it's usually something underneath the nipple that's pulling it inward; most likely benign but could be cancerous. To be safe she ordered a mammogram and ultrasound and from there the rest was history. I'm glad you're getting it checked out and wish you all the best. Please keep us updated and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I just recently had the same thing happen, with a lump behind my nipple as well. After a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy it turned out to be an infection and the lump was an abscess. Now I'm on a heavy course of antibiotics and 2 days in my nipple is starting to go back to normal. There are a few different reasons for sudden nipple inversion, so go to the doctor and get the ball rolling on testing. There's nothing to stop you from worrying though, so the sooner the better

Just want to welcome you sloan! You've received some good feedback so far. Glad you mentioned the nipple inversion to your mom so you indeed followed up on that. Let us know how the ultrasound and mammo go.....

Since triple negative as a subtype that is predominantly diagnosed in Black and Hispanic women...... My hope is for more black and hispanic researchers and scientists to work for new medicines and treatments to help fight this horrible disease.
