So...I had my exchange in November. I still have dog ears left from the bmx. Is this normal? I thought they'd be gone. I'm a little horrified at the thought of being stuck with them for the rest of my life.

I feel silly not clarifying this with my PS before surgery, and I guess I don't want to ask him if this is normal.

Definitely ask your surgeon. I did not have implants so I don’t know the sequence of events, but with DIEP there can be revisions that take care of any issues that are concerning. It doesn’t hurt to ask. Also, you might check out the many threads here on reconstruction. Just type in “dog ears” in the search bar, for example.

I don't know if it's normal but I had dog ears from reconstruction. PS did small revisions on them several times. Because of swollen tissue, he said he would rather do 2 or 3 small revisions rather than 1 large one as he didn't want the skin to be too tight. Even though I have scars under my arms, there is no extra skin. He did a lovely job. Done as an out-patient in hospital but I am in Canada & I know that things are much different in US.

I am sorry, why you don't want to ask your PS about this thing?

I had them after the mastectomy, but my reconstruction (this Tuesday), they were cleaned up. It resulted in slightly lengthier scars but that's ok. The dog ears were very sensitive. I would have a talk with your surgeon. I would have expected them to be removed.
