Complex cyst

I went in today for my mammogram and ultrasound for a lump under my nipple that is causing nipple inversion. When the tech finished with her images she asked me to stay in case she needed anymore, then came back in with the radiologist who took a couple more images and told me that I have a cyst, but they can see some areas of solid matter as well. She told me that I will need a biopsy and asked if I had any other questions, to which I replied “none that can be answered before a biopsy”. After the radiologist left the tech was really comforting, she said that they really don’t know, and that’s why the biopsy is necessary. I received a call from my primary care physician within about a half hour of my appointment who also said I was going to need a biopsy and that he was putting in the request. Now I’m waiting for the radiologists report to be uploaded into the portal to learn anymore information. I didn’t know about birad scale before the appointment or I would have asked.

Any pointers on questions to ask during the biopsy? And how to stay sane until it happens lol? I waited only 2 weeks for the mammogram/ultrasound appointment, but it felt like forever!! It’s funny how I don’t find the diagnosis aspect of it that scary, but the waiting for it is torture. There is no action to waiting I guess, so it’s a helplessness I don’t enjoy

Hi Bubbles82, sorry you are here with concerns.

As to Birads, since a biopsy was recommended, you can pretty much assume it was given a Birads 4, which encompasses everything from over 2% chance of being cancer up to 95% chance (thus lots of benign biopsies.). Your cyst would likely fall very low on that scale of probability. I had an ultrasound guided core needle biopsy for complex cyst vs. benign inframammary lymph node. It started collapsing with the first pass of the needle, and was pretty much gone by the time we were done, and came back benign. Ultrasound guided biopsies are easy. Aside from a little sting when they first start numbing you, they aren’t particularly uncomfortable and they just take a few minutes after they get the ultrasound “zeroed in.

Bubbles, welcome to Breastcancer.org! We're glad you've found us, although we're sorry you have to be here worried and waiting!

You might like to check out our page on what to expect about the procedure and questions to ask your doctor in the Biopsy section of the main Breastcancer.org site.

Please keep us posted on how you're doing while you wait and and about results. We hope that this turns out to be nothing, and you can move past this.

    Best wishes,

    From the Mods

Just want to welcome you Bubbles! Yes waiting is so difficult for these things! Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the biopsy or the results though likely several days to a week for the latter is pretty normal. Do what you can to stay focused on what is right in front of you during the waiting even though worry thoughts will be there much of that time. Hopefully there are some things you find enjoyable and/or relaxing to help through the time too - more difficult during COVID obviously.... Please check back in as things unfold, ok?

Thank you so much for your comforting replies. I got a call from the doctors office this morning, and I’m off for a core biopsy tomorrow morning!! I don’t know who is running this program here, but they need to work on world domination. I’ve never been so unnerved by the quickness of our medical system before. But it’s great. I’ll update again when I know more.

Had the biopsy, the radiologist said it looks like the cystic area has decreased since Thursday which leads him to think is was most likely an infection which seems to be resolving now. So just waiting on the results now to confirm, but feeling a lot better about it now

Wow that would be great Bubbles! Glad you are feeling better. You will hear about biopsy in near future so hoping resolving infection is what it is!

results are in and it’s an infection with an abscess, so doc called in a couple antibiotics for me and I have to go back and see him once they’re done. Thanks for everything!
