Hi all. I am new here. I have not been diagnosed with bc yet, but I am freaking out. I noticed a lump, had an ultrasound and they scaled it Bi rad 4. Has anyone had a birad 4 turn out b9?

    I am in the same exact situation. My biopsy is Monday morning & it can’t get here fast enough. I am a wreck. From what I’ve read, even with a birads4 there is still a pretty good chance it is not cancer. Were you able to read the ultrasound report & read the description of the mass? I’ll be praying for you.

    Most BI-RADs4 are benign. A BI-RADs4 is assigned and a biopsy is recommended for anything that the radiologist assesses to have a greater than 2% risk of being cancer. So BI-RADs4 biopsies are very common, and usually are done to rule out cancer, not because cancer is expected to be found. This chart explains BI-RADs ratings. BI-RADs4 can be broken down to 4a, 4b and 4c; most biopsies are 4a or 4b. So on average, about 75% of BI-RADs4 are benign, and only 25% are malignant.

    The problem with imaging is that when something shows up, while it might look like something quite harmless, often it's impossible to know for sure without doing a biopsy. Do you have a copy of the imaging report? The way that the mass is described in the report might give an idea of what the radiologist thinks this could be. In younger women, what's most common are fibroadenomas, which are harmless benign lumps.

    I've had 7 breast biopsies over my lifetime, the first when I was 16 and the second when I was 24. Both of those were for fibroadenomas. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 49 - and it was the opposite breast from all my previous biopsies, so completely unrelated - but most of my biopsies have been benign.

    Hi peach3.

    I was also a BI-RADs 4 and am waiting for my biopsy which is scheduled for Wednesday. Many of the ladies here made me feel much better about it, because initially I was freaking out as well. I'm still concerned, but not freaking out. Did you get your biopsy scheduled already? Hopefully, you don't have to wait too long, that is definitely the hard part.
