Light a Candle

image
Light a candle for those we mourn.

Into a new life they will be born.

Do not look for them at the gravesite.

They are somewhere else radiating their beautiful light.

They have gone to a new world where there is no darkness, no pain.

Their light and essence will always remain.

Light a candle for those who have left this mortal place.

They are free to travel through time and space.

When we think of them, they are near.

When we sit in a beautiful garden. Their voices we hear.

When we listen to a divine symphony,

We close our eyes, their faces we see.

Light a candle for they have not really gone.

With each flickering flame, in your hearts they will always belong.

"I am leaving you with a gift---peace of mind and heart.
And the peace I give isn't like the peace the world gives. Be not troubled or afraid."
John 14:27

My Lord, the Good Shepherd, be with these families as they experience the loss of life of their loved one. . Give them peace. Give them hope. Surround them with loved ones. Allow them to feel your loving arms of comfort and peace. AMEN.

    I felt an angel's presence
On the day you left my side:
A gentle touch upon my cheek,
To wipe the tears I cried.

I seemed to hear her whisper
"Your loved one's in God's care,
Just turn your eyes to Heaven
    And know he's resting there."

    Her presence brought me comfort;
It was as if she knew
My faith in God was tested,
On the day that I lost you.

    The years have swiftly passed,
Yet still I sense her near,
And know, whatever comes my way,
She'll help me through each fear.

    KEEP THE FORK

There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and was given 3 months to live. As she began getting her things "in order," she called her pastor and asked him to come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she wanted read, and what dress she wanted to be buried in. She also requested to be buried with her favorite Bible in her left hand. Everything was in order and as the pastor was preparing to leave, the woman suddenly remembered one final request that was very important to her. "Please Pastor, just one more thing," she said excitedly. "Sure, What is it" came the pastor's reply. "This is very important to me," the woman continued. "I want to be buried holding a fork in my right hand." The pastor gazed at the woman, at a loss for words. "That surprises you, doesn't it?" the woman asked. The pastor replied "Well to be quite honest, I'm puzzled by their request. "The woman explained." You see, Pastor, in all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I remember that when the dishes were being cleared after the main course, someone would inevitably lean over to me and say, "Keep your Fork". It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming, like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance to end the great meal. "The pastor listened intently and a smile came upon his face. The woman continued, "So, I just want people to see me there in the casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder. "What's with the fork?". Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your Fork. The best is yet to come". The pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the woman good-bye. He knew that this would be one of the last times that he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the woman had a better grasp of Heaven than he did. She KNEW and trusted that the best was yet to come. At the funeral, everyone that walked by the woman's casket saw her wearing a beautiful dress with her favorite Bible held in her left hand and a fork held in her right hand. Over and Over the pastor heard people ask the question, "Why is she holding a fork?" And his smile began to get larger and brighter each time. During his message, the pastor told the people about the conversation that he had with the woman shortly before she died. He explained the fork and what it symbolized to her. The Pastor told everyone how he could not stop thinking about the fork and how he hoped that they would not be able to stop thinking about it either. That fork, and the meaning of it to the woman, had quite the impact on everyone and they are still sharing the story with people they meet. And now it has been shared with you. So the next time you reach for your fork let it remind you, oh so gently, that the best is yet to come...

Carrie, thank you for posting this story. I miss my mother and my sister daily (both left me much too soon and much too young). This story made me think of all the wonderful family celebration dinners we'd have. One of my mother's best expressions after a meal was "save your fork Duke, we're having pie" -- her take on it was that some commoner had said that to the Duke of Edinburgh after an official dinner. True or not, she adopted it, saying, "if keeping your dinner fork for dessert is good enough for the Duke, it's good enough for us." I like this explanation just as well...there really is something better to come. Always.

I needed the quiet so he drew me aside
Into the shadows where we could confide,
Away from the bustle where all the day long
I hurried and worried when active and strong.
I needed the quiet tho at first I rebelled,
But gently, so gently my cross he upheld,
And whispered so sweetly of spiritual things,
Tho weakened in body, my spirit took wings
To heights never heard of when active and gay,
He loved me so greatly he drew me away.
I needed the quiet, no prison my bed,
But a beautiful valley of blessings instead –
A place to grow richer in Jesus to hide
I needed the quiet so he drew me aside.

    I find an old photograph
    and see your smile.
As I feel your presence anew,
    I am filled with warmth
    and my heart remembers love.

    I read an old card
    sent many years ago
during a time of turmoil and confusion.
    The soothing words written then
    still caress my spirit
    and bring me peace.

I remember who you used to be
    the laughter we shared
and wonder what you have become.
    Where are you now,
    Where did you go,
When the body is left behind
and the spirit is released to fly?

Perhaps you are the morning bird
    singing joyfully at sunrise,
    or the butterfly that dances
    so carelessly on the breeze
    or the rainbow of colors
    that brightens a stormy sky
or the fingers of afternoon mist
    delicately reaching over the mountains
or the final few rays of the setting sun
    lighting up the skies
edging the clouds with a magical glow.

    I miss your being
    but I feel your presence,
In whatever form you choose to take,
however you now choose to be.

Your spirit has become for me
    a guardian angel on high
guiding, advising, and watching over me.

    I remember you.
    You are with me
    and I am not afraid.

For my parents, I miss you ever day.

    God's Garden

    God looked around His garden
    And found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the Earth
    And saw your tired face.

He put His arms around you,
    And lifted you to rest.
    God's garden must be beautiful,
    He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
    Get well on Earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough,
and the hills were hard to climb.
So He closed your weary eyelids,
    and whispered, "Peace be thine."

It broke our hearts to lose you,
    But you didn't go alone.
For a part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

If we could have a wish today,
It would not be for a million dollars or for gold,
But just to have you back with us,
As in the days of old.

As we look upon your pictures,
    Sweet memories we recall,
Of a face so full of sunshine,
And a smile for one and all.

A million times we needed you,
A million times we have cried.
If love could have saved you,
    You never would have died.

    Day's have passed now
    As we watch in sorrow.
    Knowing that there
    Would not be a tomorrow.

    So many tears,
    So much pain.
    In our hearts
    It will always rain.

    With your heart of gold
    And your beautiful face.
    How could we ever
    Forget your embrace?

Rest in peace, be free of pain.
No more tears and no more rain.

Misty breeze wraps about my shoulders, thinly clad.
I shiver not, despite the coolness on my skin.
    Comfort, I now feel.
Is it you my precious Angel?

Are you there? I cannot hear your quiet voice,
But bird song fills the air
From high treetops to grassy marsh.
I wonder – is it you, Dear? Are you there?

The roses in your garden bloom large,
And varied in hue from crimson deep, to barely pink.
I cup the velvet bud, its fragrance soothes a troubled mind.
This must be you, my little girl. Are you there?

Are you the fiery autumn maples,
Or the star-like flakes of snow?
Are you the sparkle in the water of the lake that we both loved,
Or, perhaps, the warmth I feel in the sand beneath my toes?

Though your quiet voice I cannot hear,
Nor can I see again your sparkling eyes,
Or feel your dainty hand laid gently on my own,
    You are here.

For memory's book will never close –
Each lovely sound, or sight, or scent,
Another page from special times that we have shared.
Oh, yes! You are here child – everywhere!

In memory of my daughter Mandy~

    A butterfly lights beside us
    like a sunbeam
    And for a brief moment
    its glory and beauty
    belong to our world

    But then it flies again
    And though we wish
    it could have stayed...
    We feel lucky
    to have seen it~~~Author Unknown

    Letter to the Dearly Departed...

    Oh! My friends,
    I loved you all...
    each
    for your own unique ways--

And I think about you often.
    More than you'd imagine
    if you still thought
    with mortal minds, alone.

    And I sense -- I feel
    that you now know
    how close in Spirit
    we ALL are--one to another
    for eternity everlasting!

    Save me a place
    on the other side
    when my time comes.
    And, if it's convenient,
    be there to greet me
    ...when I arrive --

    Vaya Con Dios, mi amigos!
    Hasta la vista ....

    ...one o' my poems...
    Enjoy,
