I just found a lump on my right breast, the size of a marble. It did not hurt when I first found it but more and more it’s hurting / uncomfortable. I did ultrasound and mammogram. The dr did not take the time to explain the results to me. She wants me to have a biopsy. I have 2 years old boy. Since then, I started buying him cloths and things for the upcoming 4 years in case if I die. I do not trust my husband’s taste :). I’m terrified. I would not maybe care that much about my life if I do not have my son.

Here is the results:

TECHNIQUE:

Bilateral digital breast tomosynthesis was performed with generated 2-dimensional mammographic images. Lead marker was placed on the palpable abnormality lateral to the right nipple. Computer aided detection was applied.

Targeted ultrasound was also performed of the .

COMPARISON: No prior mammograms are available for comparison. Notes indicate that this is

the patient's baseline mammogram.

FINDINGS:

MAMMOGRAM:

Breast Density: Heterogeneously dense, which may obscure small masses.

Right breast: Obscured mass is observed upper outer anterior breast corresponding to the

palpable abnormality. Corresponding solid mass was seen on subsequent ultrasound examination. Biopsy is recommended. No other suspicious findings.

Left breast: No suspicious masses, calcifications, or other abnormalities are seen.

ULTRASOUND:

Targeted right breast ultrasound was performed at the site of concern. Oval hypoechoic mass

demonstrating mildly lobulated margins was observed at the 10:00 position 2 cm from the

nipple. This mass measured 1.7 cm x 1.8 cm x 1.1 cm and corresponded to the palpable

abnormality. It is consistent with a solid lesion. Malignancy is not excluded, and biopsy isrecommended. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy could be performed.

Findings and recommendation were discussed with the patient at the conclusion of the study.

IMPRESSION:

1.8 cm hypoechoic right breast mass for which biopsy is recommended.

CATEGORY 4 - SUSPICIOUS ABNORMALITY (4B - Moderate suspicion for malignancy)

TISSUE DIAGNOSIS IS RECOMMENDED

Aleissa, sorry that you've had to join us here.

Okay, so you have a solid mass in your breast. And you need a biopsy. That's always scary, but these types of situations often turn out fine.

The description from your imaging is that you have an oval hypoechoic mass with mildly lobulated margins. That could describe lots of different things, both benign and malignant. That's why the biopsy is necessary, because beyond that description, the radiologist can't tell what it is. However by assigning the imaging a BI-RADS 4B, what the radiologist is saying that based on his (or her) experience, he has assessed the risk of cancer to be between 10% and 50%. In other words, the radiologist believes there is a 50% to 90% chance that this mass is not cancer. But a biopsy is needed to find out.

So the odds are in your favor that this won't be cancer. And if is it cancer? 80% of breast cancer diagnoses are early stage, very treatable, and have a good prognosis. Many diagnoses don't require chemo. Don't start going to worst case scenarios. At this point, all you know is that you need to have a biopsy. And that might very well be the end of this not-very-pleasant adventure.

    When is your biopsy?

Please spend the time before your next appointment having FUN with your child! Watch silly movies, do some outdoor things unless you're having a blizzard. There's a good chance the findings will be benign, and if they're not? Look at how many members are on this forum - we've had cancer and most of us are alive and posting, many members long years after they had cancer.

You've received some really good feedback so far! I'm glad your biopsy is in just two days to help minimize that waiting. I realize the two days probably still feels so far from now.... Keep the info. above in your mind as you wait for results... the facts and odds can help keep you grounded, support during the days of waiting and then the importance of keeping yourself distracted with who and what you enjoy in life a bit more the days following the biopsy while waiting for results....
