Does a biopsy hurt?
Hi everyone! I’m new here. I had a diagnostic mammogram this week and an ultrasound to evaluate two breast masses. The radiologist said one was a benign cyst but the other one which 1.8 cm he described as very worrisome and likely cancer. I’m terrified and haven’t slept more than 4 hours in the last two nights. He said the next step is a core biopsy which he called no big deal and not painful. He said I’d have a bandaid and that is all. He also stated that the lump was small thatI probably just had a “little cancer” whatever that means. My dad died of cancer so I am even more worried about what I am facing.
Does anyone have any advice they can share about what I can expect from the biopsy. The dr said they would take out 4 or 5 pieces to test.
Thanks in advance. 😊

Hi, they will freeze you so if you've ever had dental freezing, it's very similar. Just a little pinch sting when the freezing needle first goes in. Then the freezing kicks in & you can't feel anything. They freeze you very well and you should not feel anything but pressure after that. If you feel pain, ask for more freezing.
The tool that does the biopsy is like a big syringe but it makes a loud noise - like a staple gun. My radiologist demonstrated it to me beforehand & she always let me know just before she pushed the button so I wouldn't flinch at the noise. Usually the most uncomfortable part is the positioning. They often need your arm up etc. When the nurse is positioning you, you can ask for extra pillows etc to support you so you're comfy. You can also ask for them to put a facecloth over your eyes so you can just try to ignore it all and pretend you're not there.
I had hardly any bleeding after. It really is just a bandaid thing. They gave me a small icepack to put in my bra. I went grocery shopping on the way home from mine in 2017. It felt bruised that night & I took a tylenol at bedtime but that was it.
I hope this helps. Deep slow breaths - you can do this.

Thank you moth for your quick reply. I feel better after reading your message. I’m going to call early next week to schedule. I can’t deal with much more this week. Hugs to us all!!

I’m so sorry you are here. The waiting time is so tough. I second Moth—you can get through the biopsy. My doctor set the screen so I could watch them, but I decided to be a chicken and keep my eyes closed. It was quick, and I just had some bruising afterwards. The noise was kind of strange, but it really didn’t hurt. You can definitely get through this. Please keep us updated.

I had a core biopsy and it didn't hurt at all. Just a tiny pinch for a second or two when they put the novacaine in. It was really, really easy. Wishing you the best.

Yep, easier than going to the dentist. I'd suggest doing some fun stuff between now and your biopsy - and also after. It's tricky with Covid and winter, but if nothing else, watch some goofy movies or turn up the music and silly dance.

Thank you AliceBastable for the encouragement. I’m trying to keep my mind off of everything so doing something fun I think would definitely help me!

Thank you so much Cowgirl13. Love and hugs to us all.

It should not hurt. If it does start to hurt, speak up and tell them you need more lidocaine and to wait for it to take effect.
-
I had to have 4. It is definitely not painful and nothing to worry about. Good luck. I know the waiting is the hardest.
-
Thank you Poppy_90. I don’t think I would want to watch either. I will definitely keep you updated. I’m praying the radiologist is wrong.
-
Thank you Krose53 for your encouragement. Yes waiting is the worst. I am trying not to worry until I have something to worry about but it’s hard :

Great advice ShetlandPony, thank you. The dentist has to numb me extra so it’s good to know that I should speak up if it hurts.
-
Tell them about the dentist.

Given the choice between a dental filling and a breast biopsy, I'll choose the biopsy! Everything others have said here was true for me, too. I thought the sensation of the biopsy tool taking the sample was a little like a small snap with a rubber band. Not painful, just a little zing.
Before I went for mine, I made the mistake of reading exaggerated stories on the internet of horrible experiences. Nothing I was worried about came to pass. My team was skillful and compassionate, the procedure was quick, and the pain was minimal. Everyone's different, of course, but I found it to be pretty easy.

I don't want to be the contrary one but I agree with others - once you get past the sting of the lidocaine, everything should be fine .... until it isn't. My radiologist talked with me the entire time so I really wasn't focused on the clicking. All of a sudden, I felt as though I'd been jabbed with a knife. He acknowledged immediately I was in pain but reassured me I would get more lidocaine. Within a minute, I had no pain. Apparently, the device he used also was connected to a lidocaine syringe driver so he just had to push a button. I was tense & stiff until he finished which in my memory wasn't too long. So, rest assured, if you are experiencing pain, your radiologist can rapidly give you more lidocaine so you are more comfortable. I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I needed it.

Thank you sbelizabeth. That makes me feel better. I need to stay off of Google! I’ve read the horror stories too.

good to know jhl. Thanks for your encouragement. I’ll be sure and speak up if I feel any pain.
