SEVERE health anxiety
I have lived with a little bit of health anxiety for as long as I can remember but lately it’s become completely uncontrollable.
I am currently taking a synthetic hormone replacements medication (synthroid) for my thyroid but your body really only feels the effects in 6 to 8 weeks so I am experiencing normal thyroid symptoms but then my brain starts going crazy.
I’m 33. Overweight but healthy, and my most recent blood test came back completely normal with the exception of my thyroid. For the last week or so I’ve been experiencing some minor soreness under both armpits. My husbands convinced that it’s due to my thyroid being completely out of whack plus the medication.
Naturally I started poking and prodding, feeling for lumps in my breasts and underarms (which I couldn’t find) but the sorensss has been intermittent for about a week (likely because I can’t stop touching).
This evening I found a little redness / purple on my BOTH breasts and completely broke down. I’m now terrified of IBC and I’m in a full blown panic spiral, googling for the last 3 hours and bawling my eyes out holding my 5 month old baby.
I don’t even know if what I see on my breasts could even be considered a “sign” of redness for IBC....

Stop and take a breath. You just discovered why it's not a good idea to search symptoms on google. How old are you? Are you still breast feeding? It's unlikely that you have IBC. If you can keep yourself from touching & poking & prodding, it would make sense to see your OB/Gyn about the lingering soreness. But you have to keep your hands off in the mean time.
Edited to add. If you have severe anxiety, do you already have a doctor treating that? If so, call and request a prescription. If not - that should be your first appointment. There are drugs to help,.
-
I am 33, and not nursing / breastfeeding.
I don’t even know if what I see on my breasts would even be considered a rash / or “sign” - I just worry myself sick.
And then I get onto other forums in the internet full of people who were misdiagnosed and it was in fact IBC.
I am seeing someone for my health anxiety but haven’t had much success yet ...
-
I think it would be wise to visit anxiety forums rather than cancer forums if you are looking for a solution for health anxiety. Anxiety is serious and looking for cancer is not going to decrease your anxiety.
Wishing you peace.
-
clc - as I said - take a deep breath. We are not doctors on these threads, but we see a LOT of people who are panicked about IBC after reading forums. Saying the internet is "full of people" who were misdiagnosed is more than a bit of exaggeration.
Are you worried about the soreness or what you're seeing as redness? For the soreness - make an appointment with your OB/Gyn. If she/he doesn't also answer your questions about redness, make an appointment with your dermatologist.
-
I can assure you I am not looking for cancer. I can assure you that my anxiety causes irrational fears about cancer, having cancer and everything surrounding it.
When I saw this “rash” on my skin I absolutely lost it.
It went from “what would the likelyhood of it being on BOTH breasts being IBC” and “both of my underarms are intermittent sore” - be actual cancer / rational thoughts to this is obviously what’s wrong with me and I am going to be diagnosed with something that has a terrible prognosis.
It’s all consuming.
-
at the moment, the redness.
The soreness could be a symptom of my thyroid imbalance / getting used to the medication which is a hormone which is more than likely the culprit to some soreness in my lymph areas.
The redness (I wish I would attached a photo) is what totally scared me. It’s almost little patches with little red spider veins ... I can’t even describe it correctly.
-
The Mods prefer we don't attach photos.
Maybe Beesie will chime in. I'm pretty sure that she's posted before that IBC doesn't present on BOTH breasts.
-
clc - is this your 1st baby?
-
minusTwo, I appreciate you taking the time to answer me. It’s been a calming experience to type it out and have someone answer me.
My husbands very patient with me and assured me it didn’t look like what any of the pictures on google looked like and he could hardly see what I am seeing.
I don’t know who Beesie is (I’m new here) but my logical rational brain tells me thinks wouldn’t present in two places (like when I feel something in one arm and then feel it in the same place on the other arm, it’s likely normal)
this “redness” is on both breasts (and its very very faint). -
no it’s actually my third.
1st will be 12 in March
2nd turned 3 in August
Baby born July.
All healthy, c-section babies.
I believe my last pregnancy caused me severe post partum anxiety / health anxiety but it’s completely debilitating and coming out in the form of cancer phobia.
-
Yes, that's what I was going to mention...postpartum depression. I got it also a bit with one of mine (I have 4). From what I understand it peaks around the 4th month. Mine are 14, 10, 4 and 2...it's the 4 year old I had PPD with. If you already suffer from anxiety it can completely get that out of control...maybe worth a call to your OB to see if they can see you about it. They can at least give a quick look at your breasts too, but the PPD can get sorted out with meds or even just someone to talk to.
-
it makes sense, it really started getting bad about a month ago. She just turned 5 months old.
I am going to call my OB in the morning.
Thank you.
-
I think that's a good plan to call tomorrow. Even experienced moms sometimes have a hard time realizing what's going on with PPD, especially if you didn't have it with previous babies. I'm here for talking about the mom stuff if you want to private message me, feel free.

Hi clc0302,
I am so sorry you have increased anxiety about your health. I do know some small things about breast cancer and lots of things about drugs. First, you are 33 with 3 children, one of whom is a 5 month old. Your life is full & stressful most everyday, right? It sounds like you have a very supportive husband though. Are you able to share some things you spoke about with regard to your thyroid? Do you have your TSH, T3 & T4 values which precipitated you starting on levothyroxine? Was that medication started after your last child was born or during that pregnancy? Do you mind sharing your dose? It would help to know how long you've been on it - weeks, days.
One of the things about medications that treat hypothyroidism is they can suddenly give you 'internal' energy you might have not had in awhile. People will commonly describe nervousness, irritability, a rapid heart rate, rashes and .... excessive sweating in the axillary area. You did not mention where you live but here in Northern California, we just started putting on the heat & wearing wool clothes. Those can contribute to irritation & heat rashes.
Your symptoms might be completely related to your medication and, of course, your medical anxiety. You mentioned you are already under treatment for anxiety. Are you able to share the type of treatment you are receiving? It is not unreasonable for a 33 year old woman to request a mammogram. That would be an actual task you could schedule & look forward to for definitive information.
All the best,
Jane

hi Jane.
Basic background;
Diagnosed Graves' disease / hyperthyroid in August of 2018 (12 months post partum). Had RAI to treat hyperthyroidism February 2019. Was successful and actually wasn't even put on synthroid right away because I was hovering around normal.
Got pregnant November 2019 - bloods taken December 2019 - slightly hypothyroid but didn't feel the need for medication to regulate.
Bloods done recently November 2020 after experiencing intermittent throat tightness, light reoccurring coughs and cold sensation in throat. Physical exam doctor felt my left side of my thyroid was a bit larger than right. Went for ultrasound last week waiting for results. Started synthroid (0.05 mcg) 1x per day, two weeks ago + two days.
TSH was 9.7. T3 was normal, T4 was slightly out of range can’t remember numerical value.
I live in Montreal, Quebec - heating is on that's for sure! I often don't wear a bra either because I'm home with 3 kids and my boobs are on the larger side so felt maybe the “discomfort" “soreness" in auxiliary area was due to the medication / thyroid / weight of breasts. I am getting hot flashes too (Graves symptom) and major anxiety / irritability.
For my anxiety I just started a session last week - no medication as of yet.

I'm sorry you are dealing with health anxiety. That said, there is nothing that you describe that sounds like breast cancer.
"And then I get onto other forums in the internet full of people who were misdiagnosed and it was in fact IBC"
Don't believe everything you read. IBC represents only about 1% of all breast cancers. It usually presents in quite an obvious way. So there is simply no way that the internet is full of people who were misdiagnosed. But maybe there are a handful of stories that have been repeated over and over and over on different websites, because one person read it somewhere and posted about it and someone else read that post and wrote about it somewhere else.... If you are going to use the internet for health issues, stick with reliable medical websites.
You say that both your underarms have been sore and you have a little redness/purple on both breasts (which sounds perfectly normal, actually). You are concerned about IBC. Have you looked at a list of symptoms of IBC? There are 7 or 8 common symptoms. From what you've written / described, it doesn't sound as though you have even one of the classic symptoms. And if you were to develop bilateral IBC (i.e. IBC in both breasts) at the age of 33, you would be so rare that you would be written up in medical journals all round the world.
My advice? Get off this website and all websites that talk about breast cancer. Stop poking around trying to find something wrong with your breasts - the poking around is going to cause pain and that will lead you to think something is wrong. Talk to your doctor about your anxiety and whether it might be heightened by post-partum depression or your thyroid meds. Deal with the issue you know you have - the anxiety.
Good luck.
-
thank you Beesie for putting me in my place. I really do apologize if I have offended anyone by posting here - I literally cannot control it. I end up in such a tizzy / bad head space and I end up down there rabbit holes.
You are right - I know the classic symptoms and I don’t even really present with half of one. My brain (and others as well) are incredible machines that have the ability to literally make you truly believe something is real.

clc0302
You haven't offended anyone here. Beesie (and MinusTwo, and several others) are our resident talk-the-panicky-newbies-off-the-ledge brigade, by giving solid, actual statistics and a good dose of common sense. It sounds like you just started the thyroid meds, so of course your body is still adjusting. And your mind - a lot of meds can cause our mental wiring to need a period of afjustment. And as someone who has (well, HAD in one case 😁) pretty large boobs, let me tell you that size plus gravity plus multiple pregnancies DO NOT mix well with going braless for any length of time. It makes them hurt! It causes skin-on-skin heat rashes! It causes spider veins and blotches! Wear a bra with at least some support for at least part of the day if you can stand it.
-
Oh yes Alice - women with large breasts really need to wear a bra for support. Thanks Beesie.
-
thanks Alice. I appreciate you taking the time to right. And you are right, the heaviness odd them could in itself be causing unwanted soreness under my arms. They are quite large (DD+) and in the last two weeks I think I’ve worn a bra 1 day.
I will absolutely be more conscious of this.
I was also told that the medication could take 6-8 weeks for desired results so it’s possible my body is still adjusting.
-
thanks minusTwo.
I will absolutely be more conscious about my bra wearing.
As for your earlier comment which was validated by Beeise, it would be highly unlikely for something to present itself in two separate locations. Just by you mentioning that earlier helped me catch my breath.

Hello everyone!
I hope that it’s ok that I chime in, much of what has been written I resonate with completely. Since having my first child 4 years ago my heath anxiety has been something I have struggled with. In particular this fear that I will get cancer and not be here for them. It sort of comes in waves and it’s usually brought on by a physical “symptom” that I experience.
Three weeks ago I noticed like a red lump (maybe the size of a 5c coin or maybe smaller- Australian coin lol). I convinced my GP to send me to a breast surgeon. He did a thorough exam and an ultrasound. He said that it’s a sebaceous cyst. In colour it has changed to more of a purple now and some parts of it seem to have faded. It has also flattened out a bit. They got me back for another ultrasound because they knew I was anxious and told me that it is now smaller from the first ultrasound. They said these cysts can resolve themselves but can often take a bit of time or he can surgically remove it for me but said it was not necessary.
I guess I am also nervous about the stories where people were told it was nothing to worry about and then it turns out being IBC. My husband is the type to completely trust the drs and take on board their diagnoses, I on the other hand have like a temporary sense of relief and then eventually start questioning it again.
Sorry if this isn’t an appropriate place to post about this. Hope it’s ok. -
Clc302:
When you first start on sythroid it's possible to experience symptoms of hypo and hyperthyroidism as your body adjusts. That has been my experience anyway. Usually when my dosage is increased I feel like my blood sugar is low and have unsatiable hunger for the first few days but I'm sure some people see an increase in their anxiety. Also, I imagine being post partum can also cause or contribute to depression and anxiety.
-
Hi again clc0302,
It sounds like your physician is doing all the appropriate tests, particularly for inflammation of your thyroid gland. That can happen for all sorts of reasons. One of them is pregnancy. Your breast symptoms along with others you mentioned might be more likely due to recently starting levothyroxine and being only 5 months postpartum. I'd recommend you contact your doctor with your symptoms & see if he/she might want new lab work. It's a bit early but might allay your fears.
We all get medical anxiety at times. If you read here, it is a common physiological symptom before our scans, lab work or oncologist visits. However, you might try re-framing your concerns in your mind from 'what is the worst that can happen' to 'what is the most likely thing to cause what I'm feeling'. I hope you will never join our ranks here and will live a long life with your three children.
Stay well & Happy Holidays,
Jane

clc - sorry for the recommend to wear a bra. I HATED wearing bras and it was the first thing I ripped off every day when I got home from work. So I do understand - they are obnoxious - but I really believe they are necessary with large breasts.
-
no, it’s likely a factor in some of the soreness I experience.
I’ve had a better day mentally today
I still feel a little soreness if I poke / prod but even when I do I don’t think anything swollen. Everything I feel on one side, I feel symmetrically on the other side too.
I often forget under our skins anywhere in the body we have muscle and tissue and ligaments and fatty deposits that if you press down hard enough you can feel.
-
clc - glad for a better day. Just try to keep your hands away from your breasts.
-
I am trying, very very hard. It’s a struggle for sure, but I’m trying the best I can.
I also reasoned with myself that the soreness keeps moving locations and hasn’t gotten worse, if anything even though it’s sore it’s improved which is likely a good sign.

I am new here and posted this question on another board and there doesn't seem to be much activity, hoping someone can help!
I just went in last Tuesday for a Diagnostic Mammogram and Bilateral Ultrasound. The technicians performed both assessments. The radiologist reviewed them and did the ultrasound again. Friday I returned for 4, yes 4 biopsies! 2 from the left breast, 1 from the right and they biopsied a lymph node under my right arm. My results will come back no later than Wednesday. My question is, is this typical? Is having 4 biopsies excessive? As kind as the attending professionals were, I could definitely sense concern. Thoughts??
-
Jenn, sorry you find yourself here. The time to response on this site depends on who happens to be be signed in on the board at that time and whether they feel that they can answer the questions asked... we are all just patients (or former patients) who are here for our own concerns or to offer support to others going through what we've been through ourselves.
You have had several responses on your own thread. And it would be helpful if you provided more information about your situation. To make it easier for those responding to provide relevant responses, it's always best to keep your questions and information in one place. So I'd suggest sticking with your own thread:
Topic: 4 Breast Biopsies! WTH?
clc0302, it sounds as though you are doing better now at controlling where your mind goes. As you said, we have muscle and tissue and all sorts of lumps and bumps under our skin, so if things are symmetrical (or relatively symmetrical - none of our bodies are exactly the same one side vs. the other), that's good.
