Recommendation for bras

In a few weeks I am having a double mastectomy without reconstruction. My nurse recommended that I get a front closure sports bra to help with compression. Anyone have any great suggestions on where to get it? Also - if anyone has other receommendations for bras, etc when I'm totally healed. I anticipate using prosethetics sometimes. The plastic surgeon that I met with today was disappointed that I was jumping on one of her many different reconstruction options. However, my number one goal is cancer free and minimal procedures.

Jasams61 - you will likely be put in a surgical bra before you leave surgery. I wore mine for a number of days until the drains were removed. After that - you'll find a lot of good ideas on this Bras 101 thread. I picked up Fruit of the Loom front closure bras & Danskin sports bras from WalMart.

I found sports bras that hooked in front on-line (Amazon) as well. They told me to order one size larger which was good advice... I only wore those 5 weeks or so. The slight compression feeling felt very good and supportive. After that I wore cami's for a bit. Now I'm just going flat and rarely even wear cami's under my top. I'm with you on minimizing procedures and surgeries....!

I did a search on the Amoena website (one of the main brands for mastectomy bras and forms) for front opening bras that provide compression and this is what I found. The Frances bras aren't very supportive but several of them sound like what you want. The ones with hooks may be more comfortable than the ones with zips immediately after surgery. We have a local bra shop that carries mastectomy bras. They fitted me with the ABC bras. https://americanbreastcare.com/product/leisure-bra/

I also have one from Amazon, but it doesn’t fit as well as the ABC bras.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found a recommendation somewhere for bras from Athletica that has option for small prosthetic if I want. Has anyone ever used those? Not right after surgery but later I thought this might be a nice option.

I totally agree with just wishing to be cancer free & less procedures. I had a double mastectomy with no reconstruction & just feel the most comfortable wearing none of the heavy prothesis or bra's.

Hi Jadams61,

I really like the Coobie bras for wearing a prosthesis (I have a unilateral mastectomy and am very content with having gone this route). They are stretchy, comfortable, not too $$, and come in a variety of colors and styles. All pull over the head--no closures. I have tried a few prostheses, and my favorite so far is from Athleta. Lightweight and comfortable--about $10 for two (of one side).

I want to share information about getting bras,prosthesis, etc from a site where they process medical insurance and Medicare that covers part or all .I was using another for years,I am a long term survivor,but it close its department for mastectomy products.

Medicare paid 80% and my insurance 20%.

This one is called Carol's Personal Mastectomy Shoppe.

They are very friendly and caring.

I too decided to go surgery free. I had a double mastectomy at the end of Dec. What I did was go to Walmart and buy bralets. They have a rounded pad but since I had nothing to fill it I bought pretty material and sewed it to the back. Then I stuffed it with pillow stuffing which weighs like nothing - and voila! Now I have boobs that fill out my t-shirts and tops. I don't feel awkward when not wearing layers of clothing and I'm still wearing a bra- but it's not weighing me down.
