Should I get a second opinion?

Hi everyone!

I went to see the Breast surgeon yesterday to go over my test results. Which are IDC left breast, hormone positive both (95%), HER negative. Grade 1. MRI showed no lymph nodes involved.

However, Im still having to wait for the genetic testing results before they do surgery. Which should be within a few days. Also, I was recommended to have a mastectomy on my left breast. However, breast surgeon stated that if my genetic testing came back negative, insurance wouldn't cover bilateral mastectomy. I would only be able to get one done.

I guess my questions are, Is it common to still wait this long before surgery? I was diagnosed on 10/9/2020. And surgery wouldn't be until November 20th. And is it common for the insurance to only cover one breast and not the other for preventive measures?

They are also setting me up with an oncologist in the meantime.

I'm just afraid of recurrence in the other breast and waiting so long before having surgery.

Terrika I cannot imagine that you would not be allowed to do a bilateral mastectomy. I also had IDC in my left breast and had no issues getting a bilateral even after my genetic testing showed no known variants. Please push back to everyone if a bilateral is what you feel is the best answer. You deserve the best of care for you.

I think my time from diagnosis to surgery was about six weeks. I have seen some people on this forum with longer times to surgery, it just varies based on scheduling. I also remember how long that time period felt and feeling every day that I just wanted it out. Please keep us updated on how you are doing. I hope you are successful in getting the surgery you want to have. My very best to you.

Edited to add: Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about insurance laws and breast cancer will advise you on your rights. Most states have protective legislation for breast cancer patients regarding the right to manage their care in the way they feel is best including reconstruction.

Hi Terrika! I only had DCIS (Grade 3 with comedo necrosis) in my left breast and opted for a bilateral mastectomy. It was paid by insurance. I would recommend calling your insurance company and asking about this, regardless of genetic testing. As Rah said it is best you have the surgery you are comfortable with, though I totally understand making sure it's paid for.

I was diagnosed July 21. My surgery was August 31. Yes, the waiting felt much longer.....

    Best and keep us updated....

Yes, I can't cite the law, but they do have to pay - if for no other reason than symmetry.

If your doc is not out there fighting for you, then yes, I'd get a second opinion.

Terrick, between my diagnosis and surgery, I waited longer than you because of the surgeon's schedule. I had my surgery in a well-known cancer center but I still had to wait. If I was you I would get a second opinion since this is a major decision you need to take. I was in a similar situation, and even though my genetic testing came back negative, I asked to have the other side of the breast removed. I had to convince the surgeon and told her that despite the normal genetic testing, my breast told us that can create cancer so it overwrites genetic testing. Also, my breast was very dense and couldn't be seen well in mammograms and I would be so worried about keeping it. My breast surgeon got convinced and I am glad I removed "the healthy" breast because they found the first signs of breast cancer in that one too. Good luck!

Terricka, a second opinion is a great thing to pursue. Doesn't hurt to have someone else review and make a suggestion. I got in quicker using my second opinion surgeon and oncologist. It could be worth it. Good luck! Julie

It's always okay to get a second opinion!

My surgery was about 7 weeks after diagnosis. That was mostly due to my own schedule, rather than the surgeon's. However, I would have waited for the genetic test results to come back, anyway, so it still would have been more than a month.

Best wishes to you. Please let us know what you find out.

I had the choice of lumpectomy or mastectomy. I chose a double mastectomy and that was without genetic testing. My surgeon left the choice up to me. I would call my insurance also but I am sure every insurance covers it.
