Weight affecting chance for flap reconstruction

I have been talking with my plastic surgeon about wanting a DEIP flap reconstruction since my first visit with him about a year ago. He’s assured me that I was a good candidate with as he put it “ample” adipose tissue for transfer. I had my bilateral mastectomy in February 2020 and went for my pre-op appointment for my reconstruction surgery coming up in November. The surgeon suddenly tells me that I am too overweight for the flap surgery we’ve scheduled. Apparently the flaps would be too big to fit and that puts them at risk of poor perfusion after surgery. I was totally floored since this is not something that they’ve even mentioned as a possible issue before now.

My options at this point are to los weight and come back in 4-6 months for the flap surgery or get implants in November. I struggled for 6 1/2 weeks to get this surgery date because of COVID pushing back surgeries so I am reluctant to change it. I also have to face the need to pay my full out of pocket on our insurance again if I don’t get it done this year. I ultimately opted for the implants next month for these reasons but I am so frustrated and emotional about not getting the surgery I had planned for so long. Has anyone else had this issue come up?

    Hi RN:

A lot of people are not able to get the type reconstruction they would like but the good news (or bad) is that implants are not always forever and many women initially get implants and then replace them with flap reconstruction later.
