Call Back After 3D Mammo - Hope This Helps Others
Hello everyone! In 2017 I had a call back regarding my annual mammogram. Needless to say, I was extremely worried! My follow up mammo pictures still looked suspicious so I had an ultrasound. The dr sent me for a biopsy after the ultrasound. My heart was in my throat. When I went for my needle guided biopsy, the dr doing the procedure immediately made me feel comfortable as she said she didn't see anything that looked like cancer. The biopsy confirmed this. After the stress of those 3 weeks, I opted for 3D mammograms as I have pretty dense breast tissue.
After 2 normal mammograms in 2018 & 2019, 2020 came back with some abnormal results -There is an asymmetry in the right breast at 1 o'clock middle depth. There also is an asymmetry in the right breast anterior depth lateral region seen on the craniocaudal view only. No other significant masses, calcifications, or other findings are seen in either breast.
I freaked, I mean absolutely freaked out! I did every single thing everyone on this board says not to do - I googled & googled & googled some more because I knew exactly what my records said & what to search for. I would try to calm myself down but part of my brain would go into full blown panic & I could not stop it.
I had to wait 2 weeks for my follow up. I first had more pictures which then resulted in another ultrasound. The dr came in & told me one of the prior asymmetries could no longer be seen. It was consistent with overlapping tissue - which I had read on this board a million times! The other suspicious spot looked like normal fatty tissue. Also of note, there were no prior records to look at as I have moved to a different state & my current dr had not received my prior mammogram records due to a backlog - also something I read on here.
I follow up in 6 months just to make sure everything looks the same. I'll make sure to post!
I told myself 3 years ago that I would post my story to help others. I didn't so I wanted to make it a priority this time. The waiting is so, so hard. I'm not the best writer but I hope this helps a few people. The regulars on here are amazing & know what they're talking about!

Hi there. I had a 3D call back on Monday, followed by ultrasound. Radiologist found three masses in my right breast in two different outer quadrants, all with those bad words - spiculated margins, taller than wider, etc. The bi-rad is 5. I'm scheduled for 3 needle biopsies next week (the soonest they could get me in), and then they said another 5 to 7 business days for pathology report. Beyond stressed and have not been able to sleep. Sadly, I've been researching on dr. google and the bi-rad 5 is the most alarming to me. I'm trying to take it a day at a time, but it is so hard. Can't tell my kids, since I don't want them stressed out too. And, it could be a false alarm, right???

Here's an excerpt from my ultrasound:
FINDINGS:
There is architectural distortion spanning 5 cm with at least 3 irregular spiculated mass measuring 1.2 cm, 1 cm and 0.9 cm. No suspicious microcalcifications.
Targeted right breast ultrasound performed to evaluate the aforementioned mammographic findings. At 10:00 position 12 cm from the nipple, there is a
1.3 x 0.8 x 1.1 cm irregular hypoechoic mass with spiculated margins
minimal peripheral vascularity. At 10:30 position 13 cm from the nipple,
there is a 1.1 x 1 x 0.8 cm irregular hypoechoic mass with spiculated
margins. Aforementioned 2 masses are possibly 1 cm apart. At 9:00 position
11 cm from the nipple, there is a 0.9 x 0.7 x 1.1 cm irregular taller than
wide hypoechoic mass with echogenic rim and indistinct margins.
Targeted right axillary ultrasound illustrates normal-appearing lymph
nodes.
IMPRESSION:
Suspicious masses the right breast 10:00 position 12 cm from the nipple,
10:30 position 13 cm from the nipple and 9:00 position 11 cm from the
nipple, corresponding to the area of focal asymmetry and architectural distortion prompting recall. Recommend ultrasound-guided biopsies of the 3 masses for further evaluation.
