I’m having a breast MRI on Thursday. The dr. Is prescribing medicine for me to take beforehand if I need it. But I’ve never had an MRI before so how do I know if I need it? What should I expect

Do loud noises, enclosed spaces bother you? If so, take the med, be sure to have someone drive to and from appointment.

They machine is quite loud, banging and clanging, the techs will tell you what ‘is coming and for how long. It can be uncomfortable and the techs can do their best to help. I’ve done about 9 of them, can barely stay awake

Could you please pick a single thread and stick to it? It is very difficult to follow you and respond thoughtfully and in context when you continue to start multiple threads

    Kdholt,

First, sorry about this latest diagnosis. That just stinks.

Second, I agree with Spookiesmom. For my MRI’s with contrast, you change into your gown. They start an IV. For breast, you are positioned on your tummy. Kind of like a massage table with holes for your breasts. Your head is facing out of the machine. You will have ear plugs. Some places offer music, headphones. I was offered a blanket. The table slides back into machine. The machine makes some clunking noises as they run the images. Part way through, they push the IV contrast. A bit more clunking and then you are done. They can and do talk to you remotely. You also have a button to push in case you want them to stop. I actually fund the whole thing actually super relaxing.

As to posting on just one thread. We all have our own preferences. I too would start a new thread for a brand new subject. Different people look at different threads and you may find people who will look at the new thread who otherwise might not have seen your question posted on another thread with a different topic which they are not following. I know MelissaDallas finds it easier to help kindly respond more efficiently when posters stick to one thread. She is super helpful and knowledgeable! However, I also get creating new threads for new types of questions!

Good luck, keep asking questions and keep us posted!

I also requested that kdholt stick to one thread. She has started 5 new threads in 10 days. Like Melissa & Beesie & Alice and a number of other members - we try to answer questions if we have any knowledge of the subject. If someone posts the exact same question in several threads - we might as well throw up our hands and forget it. There is a wealth & variety of information to be gleaned when a number of different people are all posting on the same thread - as well as the history of the questioner's problem(s).

That said - I don't take any anti-anxiety drugs except before an MRI. For those I take one Xanex. Otherwise I can't stay still enough to get good results. And yes, if you do take a pill, you will need someone to drive you home after the test.

It depends on your physical condition. I've had regular MRIs before with no problem. The breast one was worse than surgery or radiation for me because I have a lot of arthritis. My shoulders and knees were in agony the whole time, which meant my breastbone was taking my whole weight, so that was painful, too. If I ever need another, I do want muscle (and brain!) relaxers beforehand. If you take the pills, you'll need someone to drive you there and back.
