Breast Asymmetry with mass

Got the dreaded callback after my 3d Mammo. Previous mammo was normal, but I have a history of cysts. I had one in 2017 in my left breast. I'm 42. Anyway, on the phone she stated that I had an asymmetry. Today I got the actual report. Queue freaking out!! Follow up for diagnostic and US on Thursday. The cyst was also a BC scare in 2017, but this is different. I felt nothing and neither did my GP who did a breast exam with pap recently, but since my breasts are so dense that makes sense. Last mammo was one year ago exactly. Any chance this isn't cancer? Ugh. I'm glad I found this support forum.

IMPRESSION:
1. Potential developing mass with architectural distortion, LEFT breast.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Additional diagnostic mammographic views and ultrasound, LEFT breast.

BI-RADS 0: Incomplete: Need Additional Imaging Evaluation and/or Prior Mammograms for Comparison

FINDINGS: Routine 2-D and 3-D tomosynthesis digital images with bilateral XCCL series were obtained. Study was interpreted with the assistance of a computer aided detection program. The breasts are heterogeneously dense, which may obscure small masses.

There is a potential developing 1.0 cm masslike asymmetry with irregular margination within the superior medial LEFT breast best characterized on the MLO projection warranting further evaluation with spot compression tomographic views and true matter lesion as well as left breast ultrasound.

I am so sorry that you find yourself here. I got a call back last week as well (focal asymmetry). I know how nerve racking it can be. I have my diagnostic mammo on Monday.

Since I am not as learned as some of the incredibly knowledgeable women on these boards, I wouldn't dare try to interpret your report, but hopefully some of them will be along to offer their insights.

I just wanted you to know that there are people out there who understand and who are hoping for the very best outcome for you.

Jenfromtx6, try not to get ahead of yourself. It says POTENTIAL. As in, with spot compression and additional views that may not be the case after all and the could say “see you next year” on further investigation. Additionally, if there is anything developing there it could very well be something with the appearance of a benign fibroadenoma or something similar.Way too early in the process to be getting upset over it.

I'd love to see the % of women who get a call back for a diagnostic mammo & ULS. I'm sure it's over the top for women with dense breasts. It was the normal state of affairs for me EVERY TIME for 30+ years before a biopsy was required. As Melissa says, it's way too soon to be expecting the worst.

I sincerely appreciate the responses. Thank you so much. You're right! I need to focus on the word "potential" and not "mass". I will update on Thursday.

I recently received a call back for a diagnostic mammogram & US after my screening mammogram. I am 54 year old and have been going for mammograms / US for 14 years this was my first call back. My report said "possible architectural distortion seen in the MLO view only" additional views required. No sign of multiagency on US. I went for my diagnostic mammogram and US on 9/1 the report came back the same possible architectural distortion however this time the report also said partial effac. no US correlation. They did not see a mass in any of my testing. I have dense breasts so I receive a mammo and US every year. I now need to go back in 6 months to see if anything has changed.

    Good luck to you.
