Timing mammograms with MRIs: alternate, or do both at once?
This is probably the wrong forum for this question, but it seems like most who post here are done with active treatment and dealing with yearly followups, so maybe it's OK.
I'm two years out from diagnosis, almost to the day, and was originally told all I needed to do was go back to annual mammograms, along with six-month checks with the surgeon. Then six months ago my surgeon realized I have dense tissue and recommended annual MRIs as well. She ordered one, but said it would be OK to postpone it, as I was in the middle of another major medical issue and really wanted to resolve that one before potentially opening up a whole new can of worms. So now that's all done, and at my most recent six-month check I was reminded about the MRI, which I got scheduled for next week. But my mammogram is also due, and although I know it's more usual to alternate the two screenings every six months, I'd really love to just grit my teeth and do both of them in one week and then be free of thinking about it for a whole year (assuming, of course, that nothing of note is found; I will never ever take that for granted.) This surprises me, as I once felt very reassured and comforted by the idea that if anything bad started happening it wouldn't go more than six months without being discovered. I think I'm just soooo sick of thinking about medical issues after my most recent ordeal and want as long a break as I can possibly get. Just wondering what others have been told about this? My surgeon says it's fine to do both at once; my PCP recommends alternating.

My thought is that the MRI closely following the mammogram could possibly confirm something “iffy” looking on the mammogram as looking clearly benign. If anything shows on a “stand alone” MRI they will likely send you for ultrasound and/or mammogram for correlation

My MO said it’s ok to do both close together. I got way off schedule so now trying to do each every 6 months. Since the mammogram didn’t show a thing I don’t trust it. So it seems like I only have a reliable screening once a year with the MRI

Thanks! I'm glad other doctors have said it's OK to do them at the same time. I'm also remembering that my sister, who is now high risk because of me, needed a biopsy after last year's MRI, and then six months later needed another biopsy after her mammogram. Both benign, thank goodness, but having both scans at the same time would have at least allowed them to get all the biopsies done in one appointment even if the scans hadn't cancelled each other out, so to speak. I think I'll just schedule it for the same week if I can.
