Swollen, Painful Lump in Breast, Redness
Hello ladies!
This seems like a fantastic community of supportive women, and I'm so happy to "meet" you all! Hopefully I am also posting in the right place, since I am waiting for a mammogram and ultrasound next Friday.
I have made several benign lumps in my breast before, but none like this one. Out of no where one day, I woke up and it was swollen and very painful to the touch. For the first couple of days, it was intolerable and painful to the touch. There is also redness in the area where the lump is (I can feel it pushing out against my skin underneath my breast). The lump is underneath my nipple that is about 3 cm by my breast specialists assessment.
It improved the day that I saw her, and has since become more painful again (burning, occasional stabbing pains). She thinks that it is possibly an abscess from a mastitis that may have developed (not breastfeeding/no kids if that is relevant), so she wanted an ultrasound to see if there is anything we can drain. I have autoimmune issues and have been on prednisone recently and she stated all of this can also contribute.
Just wondering if anyone has had this experience. It certainly is painful, and I'm guessing cancer doesn't just pop up overnight so I'm not incredibly concerned about that, but it's hard to put these things out of your mind completely. Some days are better than others mentally.
I appreciate any insight or any suggestions for the pain until my imaging is done on the 18th.
Thank you, ladies. Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for reading this.
Mae

Breast cancer usually does not cause pain, especially early stage. I know it's hard not to let your mind go to breast cancer, but try to concentrate on what your doctor said. The waiting and worry are the absolute worst. You found the right place to ask questions/vent.
Good luck and please let us know what the outcome is.

Valentine,
Thank you so much. I used Dr. Google for good and ONLY searched benign issues. I’m leaning towards a cyst right now because of how it popped up overnight and some days it’s better than others. Other symptoms are redness in the area of where the lump is, swelling, burning and shooting pain occasionally, and I can feel an oval shaped mass that seems pretty tender. I’ve never had a cyst, but we’re gonna go with that for now. 😂
My breast specialist said it didn’t seem like anything that would be a cancer, so I’m holding onto that as well. These benign lumps just never get easier to deal with.
I so appreciate your reply. Thank you.

Mammogram and Ultrasound tomorrow! I’m feeling pretty good, because whatever this bad boy is, its shrunk down to less than half it’s original size and no more pain. I’m still placing bets on a cyst. I’ll keep you all updated.

In case anyone comes here in the future with same symptoms- radiologist agreed that clinically speaking, mass was probably an abscess. Birads 2. Mass has since completely disappeared It was around an area that was biopsies earlier this year
I was told by my BS that my % likelihood of getting breast cancer is 37% due to dense breast tissue and past biopsies. I will be getting regular MBI’s from here on out. Does anyone have experience with these? I have some questions regarding the scheduling of them, and I’ve received mixed answers.
Thank you.
