Using medical marijuana while in recovery from addiction?

Options

I'm specifically looking to hear from people who are in recovery through 12-step programs. I live in a state where recreational and medical cannabis are both legal. My drug of choice was opiates but I have also struggled with alcohol. Any thoughts/advice on using cannabis to manage chemo side effects, pain and anxiety? Thanks for any nonjudgemental suggestions.

    hi siennamitori,

I have no experience with addiction but if you decide to use medical cannabis, I can help you with that. I have been using it for several years for pain relief to avoid having to move on to opiates (I am stage IV). Wishing you the best

Sienna, I have been sober for 36 years and used to work in addiction medicine. Please feel free to PM me. I would strongly suggest that you pursue all other avenues to deal with your side effects, and there is a lot of help on this board. Its important to know what the risks are for cross-addiction and also the risks for untreated pain. Untreated pain can lead to relapse just as medication for pain can lead to addiction but there are ways to deal with that. So it is important to take full strength pain medication for 'full strength' pain--this was told to me by my boss, who was an addiction medical physician and he told me this before I was going to have surgery. This is very important personal decision. Just make sure you have good information from an addiction medicine perspective and you can't go wrong because you will have the information to make an informed decision. Personally, anytime I have pain that requires medication I take it, without a thought. I do have to differentiate however, that just because I am having a feeling I need to take a pill--that's my old thinking. And if I were in chronic pain I wouldn't be worried about being loaded from pain medication. Please feel free to PM me.

For other who may be reading this, this in no way applies to anyone with serious pain.

    One day at a time.

    Elizabeth

For example say--Your doctor prescribes 30 milligrams of a certain pain medication and you decide you only want to take 10 milligrams, if the 10 milligrams doesn't deal enough with the pain, definitely take the 30 milligrams. The 30 milligrams is full strength.
