Worried about lumpy, painful area
Hi! I am going to have this checked next week. I am 44 and noticed some lumpy tissue on the inner quadrant of my left breast around 8-11:00. It is right up along my sternum area. It isvery sore to the touch. I am not sure I would have noticed it really but I was scratching an itch. I am currently having PMS and have sore lumpy breasts quite often. I am just not sure if I have ever had it in that area? Is it normal to have lumpy fibrocystic tissue in that area? My left breast has much more fibrocystic tissue than my right and I dont feel this on that side. I am of course very worried. The texture feels like lumpy fibrocystic tissue. Any insight?

How does this differ from your previous concerns? I see you have almost 150 previous post here over about six years. What are your prior diagnoses and history?
-
This is a different area of concern for me mainly because of the location, and it has been many years since I have had any issues. I thought fibrocystic tissue was primarily in the outer quadrants so this is new and different.
My prior diagnoses via biopsy are: fibroadenoma, sclerosing lobular hyperplasia and fibrocystic breast disease. I was brushed off several times the first time I had a problem due to my age and breastfeeding. I had a lackluster ultrasound which showed nothing, and when I pressed further and was evaluated by a second tech, the mass I had was found. Many of my posts were also to support and encourage other women, they weren't just all about my issues.

"Fibrocystic breast disease" is a misnomer because it's not a disease but is a normal condition. These days it's more often called Fibrocystic Breast Condition. Over 1/2 of all women have fibrocystic breasts. It's just semantics but it's important semantics because women with fibrocystic breasts need to understand that their breasts are normal.
As someone with severely fibrocystic breasts since I was a teenager, from my own experience I can say that my breasts felt lumpy and sore and developed cysts all over. I am aware that fibrocystic tissue is most common in the upper outer quadrants but "most common" doesn't mean "always" or "only". Fibrocystic breast tissue can be anywhere in the breast.
At 44 you are almost certainly in peri-menopause, which is when fibrocystic breasts really act up. New lumpiness can appear, and not always evenly in both breasts. Cysts can develop. Since you've always had lumpy breasts and this area feels like normal fibrocystic tissue, I'd say you should wait through your cycle and probably another cycle before you get concerned. If the pain and lumpiness doesn't ease by then (after your period is done), then it might be time to get checked out. But from what you describe, most likely you have perfectly normal fibrocystic aging breasts. -
Thank you Beesie! That makes a lot of sense. I think you are on to something. This has been a very weird period cycle for me-I have been spotting for a week with the fibrocystic symptoms in full force, and just now started a normal period today..so I am guessing this is hormonal. I think your advice makes perfect, rational sense! I appreciate your advice!

I remember when I was your age, my periods, which had been regular (always a 31 day cycle) from day 1, suddenly started going nuts. My breasts were sore all the time. One time I had a long business trip and was grateful when my period started up a couple of weeks before I left, figuring that this was one thing I wouldn't have to deal with while I was away. But the second day of my trip, my period started again, just over a week since the previous one had finished. Seriously? I used to comment to friends that previously I'd known if I was feeling grumpy and my period was due that I could attribute my mood to PMS. But once I was in peri-menopause, I had no idea when or whether my moods were driven by my cycle because I had no idea when my period would start. It was very strange to deal with.

I just wanted to post an update. My fibrocystic cleared and the lumpy, tender area was still there. I had it looked at today. The lumpy area was actually on my rib, I could just feel it through my breast tissue. It was diagnosed at Tietze's disease which is an inflammation on the cartilage of my rib.
-
CuGym - good news that it's not breast related. Hope the inflammation on the rib is cleared soon.

Ditto what MinusTwo said... great news that this isn't breast related. I'm glad you now know what it is and hopefully it resolves quickly! Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks guys! I wanted to share especially since there are things that look like breast lumps, that aren't!
