xeloda and cardiac incident

I just want to let members who are on Xeloda know what happened to me. This is a rare side effect but I want people to be aware so they don't discount symptoms like I did. I was on Xeloda for over a year and it was working well for me ( my cancer was stable.) Over the last 6 months or so, I would experience tightening of my chest whenever I walked either for exercise or to go to a restaurant etc.. It was usually on about my fourth day of treatment ( I was 7 days on, 7 days off.) I reported this to my doctor and was told it was severe acid reflux ( I was experiencing reflux on a regular basis.) On August 17th, my husband and I were swimming ( and by swimming, I mean a fews laps of breast stroke without even wetting my hair.) I went into cardiac arrest. My husband rescued me from the pool and I had to be shocked twice. I had a small store with no residual damage. They gave me a defibrillator. Since then, they feel that the cardiac arrest was caused by the Xeloda which can cause constriction of the arteries. That combined with the fact that I have mitral valve prolapse caused the "perfect storm" that stopped my heart. I write this, not to scare people, ( we certainly all have plenty of uncertainty already) but to make sure that if you have any of these symptoms, that your doctor checks out your heart.

keepmewell1 -- wow! What a scary experience you had. We're so very sorry to hear this happened to you, but we really appreciate your posting here to warn others of this potential, but rare, side effect.

Happy to hear you're recovering. Stay well!

    Keepmewell1,

When I started Xeloda, I was having daily persistent headaches. Brain MRI showed no sign of brain mets. We think that the headaches were a result of the construction of arteries, which can cause headaches. I’ve been drinking stronger and more coffee (didn’t have caffeine throughout most of chemo treatment and early cycles of Xeloda) and my headaches have lessened significantly. I don’t know if the caffeine in coffee helped since it is a vasodilator, but I am feeling better.

I also had an EKG several weeks into Xeloda because I was having chest pains. The EKG was clear.

I’m glad you brought up this topic. I thought I was the only one with vascular issues from Xeloda

I noticed on another thread regarding side effects from Xeloda, that a lady taking Xeloda developed blood clots. I’m not sure if this is related to the vaso-constriction, but the vascular issues with Xeloda are worth noting

That sounds incredibly scary. Thanks heavens capable people were nearby and could use the defibrillators. I have been on Xeloda since March and find that it is unpleasant to try raising my heart rate on the days that I take it. If I try to run (I have stopped on those days) or even walk briskly, I get a headache and a soreness in my throat. Knowing how valuable exercise is to our overall health and response to cancer I find it really frustrating
