Are you having radiation therapy after surgery for early-stage breast cancer and worried about how you will make it to 3 weeks of daily treatments? A study suggests that an accelerated schedule of 5 treatments over a week offers the same benefits as a traditional accelerated schedule.

It's been awhile since I posted here but I wanted to get this info out there. I decided on the accelerated radiation without doing any research because I just wanted to get the treatment over with. As it turns out, I was NOT a good candidate for it. I am obese with large breasts and am borderline diabetic, I was 69 years old when I had radiation in 2017. I had SEVERE side effects. Please do research before radiation. I'm not saying don't have it, just be aware that the accelerated 5 day doses are not for everyone. My skin fell off my breast and was excruciatingly painful. That lasted 2 months. I had to change bandages 2x a day and apply silvadene cream. My breast was swollen, red and extremely sore for months. It still is sore. I have severe fibrosis and lymphedema although I only had one lymph node removed. Several of my ribs spontaneously fractured and I was in severe pain for 8 weeks. The Radiation Oncologist didn't even x-ray my chest to see what was wrong. She said it was "pain radiating from my breast" Even after arguing with her that the pain was different she didn't do anything. I found the broken ribs 2 years later during a CT Scan for my kidneys. I don't know if the 3 week treatment would have been better but I should have been advised so I could decide. The info is readily available online if you search for high risk side effects for accelerated breast cancer radiation. Just take a breath and do some research to see if it's right for you. God Bless.

That sounds awful. SO sorry you went through that. I too am having issues with the brachytherapy. Just a little over 2 years out and getting worse. I agree people should do their research. They did NOT tell me what to expect and I regret not looking into it myself. My decision would have been different. My best to everyone. :)
