My plastic surgeon said I will not have drains after the implant surgery. He said the second surgery doesn't require drains. From what I read, many women do have drains after implant surgery.

Thoughts anyone?

hi lavue, I did not have drains for my exchange surgery. I found it to be a much easier surgery than the the first. Wishing you a quick recovery!

maybe you don't have a large pocket for drains? I had 4 during my mastectomy which took out the most breast, then 2 during my emergency expander removal which was on 1 side tight from radiation, now I have 1 for my other expander but I've been letting it expand for over a year.

Yup, I had drains for the MX with expander placement, and no drains for the exchange surgery when the expander is taken out and implant is put in.

Some people do have drains for this second surgery but I'd say more don't than do. The first surgery is a much bigger procedure with a much greater impact on your body - all your breast tissue has been removed. The second surgery isn't really affecting your body much, it's just exchanging one foreign object for another.

Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone. I hated the drains the most after the bilateral so it's definitely a welcome not to have the after the implant surgery.

I had two drains for the BMX and again had two drains for the exchange. They're a pain but I had no problems.
