Anxious and Afraid

Hi everyone. I have a 2 cm tumor in my left breast that has been growing. I first noticed it about a year and a half ago, and thought it was a cyst. I got an ultrasound in November, and they told me it was a fibroadenoma. I got another ultrasound a few weeks ago, and my OBGYN called to tell me that it's grown significantly and I need a biopsy. She told me nothing else, which of course freaked me out. I’m only 21 so I know the chances of cancer are small, but I am terrified. I have a core needle biopsy scheduled for tomorrow morning. I'm not really sure what to do, I'm adopted so I don't know if there's a family history of breast cancer. Nobody has been really helping me as far as telling me what's going on, especially not my OB's office. I have super bad anxiety so of course I've worked myself up and have been super on edge for the last week and a half. Does anyone have any advice on how I can cope with the anxiety and waiting?

    Dear fairyferns,

Welcome to the BCO community. We are sorry that these breast changes and the accompanying worry have brought you here but glad that you reached out for support. Waiting for answers is one of the most difficult things that go along with breast changes. Here is a link to a topic that addresses common worries. Djmammo posted an article at the top of the page that seems to speak to your situation. Check it out while you are waiting for others to offer their thoughts. Keep us posted on how things go tomorrow.

    fairyferns,

So sorry that you are experiencing such anxiety. I know the feeling well. You should absolutely ask your OB/GYN for a prescription of Xanax. It will help tremendously. You may have to wait for test results for a definitive answer so it would be helpful.

I just want to reassure you that at your age, your chances are extremely minimal that it is cancer. It sounds like your OB/GYN is just being overly cautious since it has showed some growth. Lots of benign breast conditions do that.

Please let us know how it goes tomorrow. You should write down a list of questions/concerns you have for the Radiologist. If you don't understand something, ask for more clarity. Do not leave until you are satisfied that you have been given as much information as you need.

    Good luck

I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner.

I hope your biopsy today went well. And I hope that it does show your lump to be a fibroadenoma. I had a fibroadenoma at 16 and another at 20. Both grew to be very large - fibroadenomas can grow, so the fact that your mass grew doesn't mean that it's malignant, it can still be a harmless fibroadenoma.

Let us know how it goes!
