Rectangle mass, diagnostic mammogram on 27th

Hi. First of all, my mom died of breast cancer, but I don't have a mutated gene for it (I do have a mutated SMAD4 gene, associated with gastrointestinal cancers). I'm 40. My nurse practitioner found a lump on March 8th. Due to the Coronavirus and other health issues, I just scheduled my diagnostic mammogram for the 27th. I'm so anxious to get it done and find out what they think that day.

Here's the description of my mass:

Right breast TTP, lateral upper quad of right breast, small rectangular mass palpated approx 10 mm by 2 mm.

I believe it's gotten bigger than it was in March, and it seems to extend into my armpit now. Actually, there is a big amount of swelling that’s softball sized in the side of my breast/into my side right below my armpit, I just noticed as well. I'm not sure how long that's been like that.

I can't find any information on rectangular breast lumps, other than it's classified as irregular. Has anyone ever heard of a rectangle lump?? I do know most benign lumps are circular or oval, and that the location isn't the best place to have a lump...

    Hi Kimmiekins, and sorry for what you are going through. The waiting and not knowing can be incredibly stressful, to say the least.

    There are many benign breast conditions as well (https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/benign), so try to keep your thoughts calm.

    Thanks, the waiting is the worst! I am trying to stay calm , I just have a really bad feeling. I’ve had a few cancer scares in the past, but this feels different. Hopefully, I’m wrong!

    Well, cancer scares mean you did NOT have cancer, so they're pretty irrelevant. As are "feelings." Wait for facts, and do fun stuff in the meantime.

    Hi Kimmiekins. I see we are neighbors. I live in Symmes township. Great doctors here in Cincinnati. I'm sorry you are going through this. The waiting is very stressful but try to relax and let the tests happen. One day at a time. So many of these conditions are benign but until you hear those words it is difficult to move forward, Please know this site is here for you to vent. It helped me so much through my 2 journeys.

    Hi neighbor! Cincinnati does have some great doctors. Both my mom and brother died of cancer, and the oncologist team they both had (over in Anderson Township) were top notch and so wonderful with them and even me. I’ll be going to the Barrett Cancer Center at UC. I have had mammograms and treatment for other health issues there before, they are wonderful. It is hard, but I’m hoping to hear those words! I’m so glad you sit down with the doctor the same day. Otherwise, I’d be an even bigger wreck for longer. You’re right, one day at a time. Thanks so much, I will definitely take advantage of this site. Hope you’re doing ok in this heat!

    update...

    I told my therapist about the swollen mass growing on the side of my breast and armpit and she said to contact my nurse practitioner. My NP was immediately concerned and said to go to urgent care today or see her tomorrow. She was booked so I see another doc tomorrow. Now I'm really worried. I didn't think this could be serious enough to not wait for the mammogram.

    I can’t imagine anyone is going to get you in for a mammogram and ultrasound much sooner than six days from now anyway. What is going back to the NP again going to accomplish at this point before your imaging?Even if it did turn out to be cancer, breast cancer is rarely an emergency, barring IBC.

    Hi Kimmiekins,

    I am sorry you are going through this. I know how tough it is. Hang in there and try to stay calm, worrying won't help. Put it out of your mind until your appointment, and instead focus on your mental and physical health.

    You mentioned your mother and brother both died of cancer, but you don't have a mutated gene for it. Did your mom or brother get tested? I ask because it is a common misunderstanding that if nothing is found by genetic testing, no mutation is there. Unfortunately that is not always the case. However if they did find something in your mom or brother and tested you for the same mutation and didn't find it - that is good news.
