Lump and Dimple in Left Breast

I have a lump and dimple in my left breast. I got a mammogram and ultrasound in March of last year. I had the lump and dimple then and an ultrasound and mammogram were performed after informing them that my mother passed away from stage 4 breast cancer. Both came back clear. The only thing that was found is a cyst in my right breast. They basically told me I have fibrocystic breast and what I'm experiencing is normal change to my breast and I'm too young to have breast cancer. However, it's only really the left breast. There are a few lumps in the right, but nothing as pronounced as the one I found in the left. Once I got the all clear, I've tried to put it to the back of my mind and believe what the doctors told me, as they have no reason to lie, however, it's still in my mind that I could have breast cancer. Nothing has changed with my breast physically since the ultrasound/mammogram last year. The lump and dimple are still there. I still get breast pain every once in a while in both breasts. Since my left breast is so dense and a little larger than my right, I've always been paranoid that they've missed something. They told me to come back in two years, but I did plan on going this year, but then the pandemic happened and now I don't have health insurance. I've never heard of fibryocystic breasts causing a dimple, and I guess that's what has me the most concerned. I know early detection is key and it's been over a year since I 1st discovered this, but I can't seem to stop feeling paranoid and anxious about it, even though the doctors told me I'm healthy.

SHockBlock - If the issues haven't changed and you've been cleared with both mammo & ULS, likely you are OK. I believe you said the Mammo & ULS were March of 2019? You didn't say how old you are, but two years is the normal duration between those tests - particularly since you say nothing has changed.

You could talk to the doc about re-doing those tests early. Now that you have a 'baseline', they would be able to see any changes. The only other thing test would be an MRI, but they are very expensive and insurance might not cover even if you did have it. Consider things to help your worrying - like long walks or Yoga. Or talk to your primary care doc about your anxiety & the possibility of medication if your worries are debilitating.

HI -when I initially went to the doctor for a palpable lump, we could see a tiny indentation when my arm was at certain angles and feel the lump, but ultrasound and mammogram were clear...as in not even showing the lump we were all able to feel. While I did follow up with a breast specialist, they did not recommend a biopsy at the time due to my age (29). Since they weren't concerned, why should I be? Anyways, fast forward nearly two years. The indentation is what made me go back. It was much more pronounced and didn't matter if my arm was up or down.

I would push for a biopsy. If it's nothing, then you have no reason to be concerned. If it's something, you're getting a super head start. But either way, you'll have an answer. Keep in mind, the chances are in your favor that everything will be fine, but there's always the chance it might not be. I don't like to give people a false sense of security...I fell for that and was diagnosed Stage 3 at age 31. Everyone told me chances are it's nothing...but that's not always the case and it's best to get all the answers that you can, especially since your experience with your mother. I don't know what type of care is available for those without insurance; but I know some places take a flat rate fee for cash payers. You would likely have to call around.

Best wishes, and keep us updated!

Thanks for the reply. I'm 34. I should be going back to work by the end of July and I will definitely be getting tested before the year is out. I hear so many stories about doctors missing diagnosis and I guess that's always caused me to be paranoid. I will definitely push for a biopsy too. If everything is fine, then I need to have peace of mind, so I can move forward with my life, but I'm also terrified everything is not fine.

Shockblock, I hope you are well. I am in the exact position. While breast-feeding my daughter I noticed a lump on my right breast. This led me to examine both breast and I noticed a indention in the bottom of my left breast. I was sent for an ultrasound and mammogram to examine the right breast they did a limited ultrasound of the left. Both came back clear after seeing further information online I took a picture of the dimple and revisited the issue with my OB. My OB was concerned with the image, she said she could not replicate the same when examining but has referred me to a breast surgeon for additional imaging. I meet with them this coming Wednesday. I’m hoping for an MRI with a clear result in a better ability to sleep at night. I am 36 years old.
