Need reconstruction advice

I'm 71 and in good health...cancer free. I had a bilateral mastectomy in January of 2018. I was going to have immediate reconstruction but decided to wait until after the surgery. Good thing I did wait. I had a horrible wound which would not heal and eventually had to have a wound vac on for 7 -8 weeks. The skin on that side is very tight to my chest.

That being said I've been told by one plastic surgeon that due to the wound issues I had, it would be better to have the flap reconstruction surgery. I really haven't read a lot on what happens post op. I'd have the fat taken from my stomach...I have plenty to get rid of. I know someone that had a tummy tuck 20 years ago and she said it was AWFUL!!!!!

Anyone have this and could shed some light on the whole procedure??? I'm petrified right now

Thanks in advance!

Janie

Hi Jane, many of us have had the DIEP surgery. When I was contemplating this surgery, I read through the 2013 DIEP thread and learned from women who had the surgery about what to expect and many of the possible outcomes. There have many other DIEP threads that will give you information. I am concerned about your difficulty healing with your mastectomy as I do remember some women having that same problem after DIEP surgery.
