@Ursulapeace54, I don't know about anywhere else, but my doctor would not leave a message whether it was good or bad. But I know things are done differently in the US compared to here in Canada. It took 2 weeks to get the results of my biopsy.

it’s rather insulting to treat the patient like a child, hiding information. Catching a word here or there only increases anxiety. I had a scare 5 years ago on my left breast. Not core needle Biopsy but another type where you lay on your stomach and the doctor biopsies it right there through a large hole at the bottom of the table. I gotta results immediately: benign fibrous growth. Not sure if the official term. This thing or things ( they saw 2 possibly) required a core biopsy. Have to wait. I missed the call today! So a doctor left a vague message to call them back but it was after hours!

Do they refrain from giving you good or bad news via voice mail? My paranoid mind thinks they’d have said everything is ok if it was benign. The message to call back makes me believe I have cancer!

I’m sorry you have been kept in the dark and that crucial information has been withheld. Good news is: I know 3 breast cancer survivors. All survived and are doing incredibly well. Please post news about your progress.

thank you! Canada has better medical care. 2 weeks is a very long time to wait! I hope you are doing well.

Fitmom, since your biopsy shows atypia, the next step in the progression of cells is DCIS - with the "IS" being "in situ". It sounds as though the report may have mentioned a possibility of DCIS, which would be a standard statement whenever atypical cells are found.

Where are you in Canada? I'm in Toronto and I've never had to wait more than a 5 or 6 days for biopsy results, less time when the result has been positive. I've had longer waits for surgical pathology, because there is a lot more tissue that they have to examine and in the case of a cancer pathology, more tests that need to be run.

Did you ask for a copy of your report? You have a right to get it. Usually for a biopsy my GP or the surgeon would provide it to me, or I could get it from the facility where the procedure was done.

@Ursulapeace54, I agree we do. And our mind always goes to worse case scenario. I hope you get good news tomorrow.

@Beesie I am on the outskirts of Sudbury. I called after a week and it was a preliminary report of atypical papillary lesion and that is what they kept it at according to her, but like I said I saw the report for the mammogram and ultrasound, but when she turned to the pathology, she pulled it up so I couldn't see, other than something underlined and all I got was in situ. I will call the hospital tomorrow to see about getting a copy.

I had my biopsy on Wednesday, core needle. My breast surgeon called today but I missed her call she did leave a message that it was benign and she would see me on Tuesday. What a good message. I pray that everyone will get good news. My mass was small and it was growing, and after going threw cancer last year, I was scared to death. Hang in everyone!!

I called my doctor for a copy of the pathology report. I have to wait til Monday as my nurse practitioner isn’t there. So I called the breast clinic and they are closed today. Then I called the hospital. I had to leave a message and waiting.

From what the doctor said, it states atypical papillary lesion but she wouldn’t let me see the report. I’m feeling ok but every once in a while where the lump is, it feels hard. Not sure why. Trying to keep busy, going to the cottage for the weekend to change the scenery.

@Swhitcraft, ouch. I hope it feels better. I was sore for a day or so. But now where the lump is every once in a while feels hard, but not all the time. It’s weird.

Have a weekend as beautiful as you

Fitmom, from my experience, when things are benign, they don't seem in the rush to get back to us, your case goes to the bottom of the list. When biopsy is bad news, for some reason they rush to give us this info. That's how my experience has been.

I agree with Lilly. I've waited for lots of imaging and screening reports over the years. When there is a concern, I hear about it pretty quickly - even if I've been told that it might take much longer. When everything is fine, it does usually take a lot longer. The other problem right now is that with Covid-19, labs may be understaffed as people quarantine and if people have been moved to work on Covid testing. You probably would be impacted by this more being in a small city.

Enjoy the cottage! I'm envious... I'm stuck here in the hot humid city, trying to maintain social distancing so not getting out much. A cottage would be a treat! Relax and leave your thoughts about this situation at home.

I got my biopsy report this morning and it's what I saw at my appointment. Unless it was another report. The preliminary report says complex papillary lesion, concordant. And the final copy says complex atypical papillary lesion and definite classification will be done in the resection specimen.

Ursula - I hope you now have benign results. Just to clarify - most docs will NOT leave anything on a voice mail that relates to your health or test results - good or bad. HIPPA rules prohibit that.

Actually they will give information on a voice mail, but you have to sign a paper stating that it is ok for them to do that. All my doctors, PCP included, have given me a paper to sign stating it was ok for them to leave a voice message on my phone. (no one is forced to sign, it is just offered) Pre-pandemic I worked in a school which had zero privacy, so I preferred to get voice messages with test results if they couldn't call me after I got home from work. It worked for me because most of the time I had 35 students in front of me.

well my lumpectomy is Tuesday morning. I have to be there for 7:30. It's weird, before my biopsy my lump felt like a pea, and now it feels flat and more elongated. Not sure if it's because of the biopsy that it feels like that.

I had my lumpectomy this morning. She took up a chunk big enough that it looked like a chicken wing. I asked her if she left me anything as I wasn't big to begin with lol. I guess once the swelling goes down and I remove the dressings, I'll see what I have left lol Pretty sore now, and almost ready for bed.

Lol fitmom. Glad it sounds like all went well. Praying for good results. Get some rest and take something if you’re uncomfortable :)
