edited July 2020 in Waiting for Test Results

Well I had my biopsy this morning. And the technician did an ultrasound first and the lump did not look the same as it did two weeks ago. Two weeks ago it looked more like a jelly bean. But today it was not oval, it didn't really have a shape, it had like a tentacle going in one direction, and it was round on the other side either. And there was some white shadowing underneath it and inside wasn't clear like last time, it had like a white film and at the bottom looked like a small whiter something. The radiologist even said they thought it was a cyst, but when he punctured it with the needle, it didn't collapse. So totally unsure as to what it could be. But we know it's not a cyst for sure. Now the wait again argh!!!!! Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Are you comparing it to an earlier ultrasound or a different test?

Fitmom04, ok so from May 27 to June 4. So they wanted another ultrasound? I will pray for you definitely. So when did the radiologist give you a new report today in writing? What's next, a biopsy? Hang in there! JCP

They did the biopsy this morning. Before the radiologist came in to do it, the technician did a quick ultrasound. And while he was doing the biopsy, he said we thought it was a cyst but he said it isn’t since when he punctured it, it didn’t disappear.

Fitmom04, once you know more, you will probably feel better bc you have control. It is super tough waiting. I'm trying to get my results tomorrow from Ct scan for lung thoracic area. Anyway, I will keep you in prayer right now for good news. JCP

Yes my mind was frazzled while I waited. I remember that. Will you get results this wk? Did they tell you when results would be back? My biopsy results I got back I think in two working days(days of the wk)

    We are here for you

they told me the results would take 1-2 weeks. But I remember my mom got her in a few days and that was years ago.

fitmomo4 That is so long to have to wait. You could call oncologist after 2 days if you are comfortable enough to do so. Prayers for you. JCP

when I had my biopsy I was told it could take up to a week for results. I didn’t wait. I called them all day long on day 3 until someone called me back and told me my results. I never listen when they tell me how long results should take. I just call and pester them till they get tired of me and finally give me my results

I finally got a hold of my nurse practitioner and she said the tests aren't finalized yet. It says atypical papillary lesion but more tests are being done. So not really answers. Going to camp for the weekend to get away and hopefully stop the chatter in my brain.

That is good you are getting away....hope you have a good weekend. We are here for support! Thank you for the update! I don't know what a atypical pappillary lesion is but maybe someone here will know what that means.

Fitmom, with atypical lesions, usually an excisional biopsy (a surgical biopsy) is recommended to remove the entire mass, to confirm the diagnosis and that nothing more serious is lurking. So assuming the final needle biopsy assessment remains an "atypical papillary lesion", be prepared for that recommendation.

But if an excisional biopsy is recommended, don't take it to mean that they think that there is cancer present. They don't. This is just standard procedure for atypical lesions and is done to confirm the benign finding from the needle biopsy.

Enjoy your weekend! I'm sure the diversion will be welcome

Hi! I had my biopsies today. Two core needle biopsies in the same breast, same quadrant. They did ultra sound first on me, too, to see the areas. They said results within 3 days. Going to be a loooong 3 days. I have to say it was very painful and I am pretty tough. I have RA and used to pain. Very bruised and swollen, hard to the touch tonight. Best of luck to you.

Hello FitMom, just chiming in to wish you the best and to send you a hug. Waiting & waiting is the worst, but the following may bring you some peace of mind during the interim.

    https://www.archivesofpathology.org/doi/full/10.58...

"There is variability in criteria used for the diagnosis of IDP with atypia, both in practice and in the literature.10 However, we refer to IDPs with foci of architectural and cytologic atypia that quantitatively and qualitatively fail to fulfill criteria for the diagnosis of DCIS as papilloma with atypia or atypical papilloma; this diagnosis is equivalent to that of atypical ductal hyperplasia elsewhere in the breast. Typically, the IDP exhibits focal solid or cribriform epithelial expansion of small (<0.3 cm) size and composed of small, monotonous epithelial cells. Foci of atypia are negative for high–molecular-weight cytokeratin (CK) 5/6 and diffusely positive for estrogen receptor (ER) via immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. An example of IDP with atypia and corresponding CK5/6 IHC is shown in Figure 2, A through C."

"Atypical papilloma may be difficult to distinguish from IDP with florid UDH. Histologic features establishing atypia are identical to those required for diagnosis elsewhere in the breast and may include focal, solid or cribriform architecture and cytologic monotony. However, florid UDH within an IDP may exhibit increased cell size and reactive changes that can be worrisome for atypia. In this setting, IHC may be helpful in establishing the diagnosis of atypia because these lesions have negative staining for CK5/6 and have strong, diffuse positive staining for ER. In contrast, UDH stains strongly positive with CK5/6 and, typically, is less strongly ER positive. However, it is important to note that columnar cell alteration (columnar cell change/hyperplasia) and apocrine metaplasia, which are commonly seen in IDPs, are also negative for CK5/6 and thus may be a pitfall in stain interpretation.22,23Figure 7, A through D, shows a case with areas of IDP with both UDH and atypia and the corresponding CK5/6 staining."

it’s very hard NOT knowing, especially after several visits. I had 2 3-D mammograms. Followed by a diagnostic mammogram, followed by an ultrasound, followed by a core needle biopsy a clip and other “ gentle” biopsy to make sure the clip is in the right places. This entailed several visits over a period of 3 weeks. Two different breast surgeons ( I assume that’s what they are but they are breast specialists) said they are very confident I have fatty tumor. Quite small. The biopsy was 2 days ago. Wouldn’t you know it but I missed the call today from yet another doctor at the breast center at 5 pm. By the time I reached them, they were closed! She left a message to call tomorrow! I’m terrified. If had been benign wouldn’t she say that? Do they usually not give you the results on the voice mail? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

thank you so much. Yes the waiting is horrible. When she was talking to me, I saw the report for the mammogram and the ultrasound, but when she looked at the pathology report, I got to see real quick before she lifted it so I couldn't see. All I saw was some underlined word but only read in situ, didn't get to see what was before it.

I know howdifficult “ further testing" sounds. Try to breathe and be faithful. Easy for me to say. I'm hysterical at the moment! A call back voice mail after my biopsy. No information!
