High dose Vitamin C

Has anyone received high dose vitamin c IV infusions? I am interested, but am reading a lot of conflicting information. The doctor I would go to was actually a trauma ER doctor then opened his own wellness clinic.

What did your doctors say if you did receive high dose Vitamin C infusions? I would receive 12 total with dosages increasing each time. They said they only do this treatment for CA patients and they will monitor and draw the following labs.

-G6PD

-Urinalysis

-Magnesium

-Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

-Complete Blood Count

-Cancer Markers specific to patient (my MO does not do these)

Any input or advice is appreciated.

Did you get your scan results from the 19th yet?

What are you expecting to gain from the Vitamin C?

I had a CT that showed small foci, and then my MO ordered a bone scan to correlate the findings. Basically, there was only one tiny area of concern on my third rib that could be caused by trauma (they do not want to biopsy the area because there are nerves and such there).

The Radiologist who read my scan said that it was statistically unlikely that it was an area of metastasis, but more likely an area of trauma and recommends follow up scans in 3-6 months. Still scary and am not sure what to think :( I just completed chemo 3 months ago and radiation last month!

Regarding the Vitamin C infusions, I've read that for ca patients, it can "kill" or targets those cells. Some studies show a benefit, but wanted to hear if others had any experience!

I personally think if it was extremely efficacious that more mainstream medicine (NCI Cancer centers and university medical centers) would offer it to everyone.

I agree with you. But I also think there are just so many unknowns in treatment and we are only starting to scratch the surface, so I want to be proactive.

Most of the “miracle” claims regarding Vitamin C were debunked many years ago.Nothing “new” to scratch the surface about. It has been (and continues to be) pretty well studied.

I read somewhere that high dose of vitamin C helps prevent recurrence. Also matcha tea. I have started matcha tea and tumeric tea. Here is an article for matcha tea: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6128439/

I did high dose Vitamin C IVs. I think they are likely to have helped me. Vitamin C is able to kill cancer stem cells-- which are NOT killed by chemo.

The "debunk" of C in high doses was a study that used ORAL vitamin C.... but you cannot achieve a high enough dose orally because it gives you diarrhea before the dose gets high enough in the blood stream. You have to have such a high level of C in the blood that it acts as a pro-oxidant, only achievable via IV. Cancer cells react lethally to the C-- and healthy cells do not.

Note: SOME people have a problem metabolizing C at the high dose... you are tested for this prior to receiving High dose C from anyone reputable.

Nobody gets wealthy from C, so it is not going to get a $50M double blind trial but it has a lot of studies behind it. I found the evidence of benefit convincing and the risk low.

There are sadly a lot of things that help treatment, that are not routinely given, because of lack of a double blind clinical trial.

santabarbarian - did you do vit c during chemo or after? how many infusions?

melissa - thanks for your input, but you clicked on this thread for what exactly? i did not claim it was a miracle as that would be irresponsible and false. what studies are you referencing? can you share?

    during chemo and after.

I did 2 x per week during chemo, starting a few weeks in. I did about 22-25 total, then stopped for rads and some travel and recovering, then went back one per month which i still do.

Are you doing any other IV nutrition (e.g. resveratrol, curcumin etc.?)

I had a friend who did IV vitamin C for her colon cancer. She went through the treatment for a year and then had scans done. The tumour had broken out of the colon and had spread. I went to the RO appointment with her and he said that IV Vitamin C has not been proven to work. She did proceed with chemo and radiation but she had more trouble than she could manage. She did what she felt was right for her. She’s no longer with , sadly.

I have had numerous High Dose Vitamin C IV ‘s. Had them during chemo. I would be told I was neutropenic and anemic, when they drew blood before chemo. They would tell me I was vulnerable to getting infections.

Then the next day I would get 50 to 60 grams IV infusion of Vitamin C from my Naturopathic Doctor. When I went back the next week my anemia and neutropenia had considerably improved to the amazement of my oncologist. She had initially told me that IV Vitamin in high doses was unsafe, but had to change her mind when I did extremely well with zero negative side effects. She said that doctors are taught High Dose IV Vitamin C is dangerous in medical school.

I also have had High dose IV Vitamin C infusions off and on since then, especially during reconstruction. The only time I had infections during reconstruction were when I didn’t get an IV Vitamin C infusion the next day after a surgery.

Santabarbarian is completely right. The May Clinic did an extremely sloppy study comparing High Dose IV Vitamin C to Oral Vitamin C. Due to Bowel tolerance, the amount of Vitamin C that can be absorbed intestinally is vastly lower than that available to the body through an IV. Basically comparing apples to oranges and calling it valid.
