physical therapy/scar massage during COVID-19 at Kessler Rehab
Sharing this because I was denied PT at the hospital where I was treated because of COVID-19 restrictions at their facility. I live in southern NY on the border of Bergen County NJ.
Despite diligently doing my PT exercises as soon as I was discharged one day after my unilateral MX, I found myself with hard, hard, hard "wooden" tissue as soon as 3 weeks later. 3 weeks after that, 6 weeks post mastectomy without reconstruction, the tightness under my armpit and all down the side of my torso was crazy. The team At my hospital had closed down their PT department, in an "abundance of caution to protect the chemo patients During Covid-19". I get that you need to protect those patients, but their facility has like 4 entrances, chemo has their own entrance, so why can't you treat the non-chemo patients In PT? So I Demanded my doctor give me a prescription for PT to go somewhere else. I found a breast cancer trained PT at one of the Kessler rehab sites in Dumont, NJ, just 30 minutes from my home. I suggest you do a little Googling in your area and look for a PT facility that Treats mastectomy patients. My PT, Tina, Menezes, in only 6 visits, has massaged my scar and surrounding areas such that my range of motion and ability to stretch in all directions is 300% better than it was two weeks ago. She is an miracle worker angel and I would recommend her to anyone who needs some help with their physical recovery post-surgery. Phone number is 201-385-627

Cake...I totally agree. My ROM after surgery was terrible and no one mentioned PT until one of my post ops weeks later! I too work with a PT who specializes in BC (or did - prior to Covid) and it made the world of difference!
I posted a week or so ago in which no one responded about a hard/thickened area on one side. This side has unfortunately gotten worse since I haven't been in PT for two months (again, due to Covid) and has made me a little worried. So, I can totally relate.
I'm glad you have found someone to help you! I hope things continue to get better.

Hi LLL:
I am so sorry to hear you cannot get the PT you need! For me, the exercises are one thing, but it is the hands-on massage from my PT that has made the world of difference. Depending on where you live, it might be worth calling your insurance carrier to get names of PT practitioners in your area that accept your insurance, and then just start calling to find out if another practitioner has a specialist for breast cancer patients and they are open for visits. That is how I found Kessler in my area. Good luck to you!
I have more visits scheduled next week and given the amazing progress I made over the last two weeks, I anticipate it will keep getting better.

Totally agree the hands-on massage makes the world of difference. I hope you're visits continue to go well!
For any of you ladies having any ROM/scar tissue issues don't hesitate to find a specialist
